　　WIFE: But you didn't see her.

　　MOTORIST: No. I wasn't looking. I was watching the truck.Then the truck went past. And Iwas turning right，Suddenly there was this cyclist.

　　THE PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE过去进行时过去进行时可用于以下各种情况：

　　1.表示过去某一时刻正在进行的动作。

　　At 8 o'clock last night I WAS watchING TV.

　　This time last year he WAS visitING his mother.

　　At 3 o'clock yesterday we WERE doING an exam.

　　通常可以这样提问：

　　What were you doing+以this time引导的来表示过去的时间状语

　　What were you doing this time

　　What were you doing last year?

　　What were you doing last night?

　　What were you doing last month?

　　What were you doing last week?

　　What were you doing last Sunday?

　　What were you doing yesterday?

　　2.表示过去某件事突然发生时正在进行的动作。突然发生的事用简单过去时。这样两个分句通常用when连接起来。

　　I was walking to work WHEN I met him.

　　Barbara was talking to John WHEN Wang arrived

　　通常可以这样提问：

　　What were you doing when...?

　　例如警察进行调查，他就可以这样问：

　　what were you doing when you saw him?

　　What were you doing when the fire engine arrived?

　　3.表示过去同时进行的两个动作。这样两个分句可以用while或as连接起来

　　I was watching TV WHILE she.

　　was chatting on the phone.

　　AS I was waiting, a truck was coming the other way.

　　4.表示过去在一段时间内进行的动作。

　　Where were you working last year?

　　-I was working in Melbourne.

　　What was your brother doing yesterday morning?

　　- He was digging in the garden.

　　CONVERSATIONAL DEVICES

　　a) This在英语口语里，特别是在生动地叙述一件事情的时候，在通常用a的地方不用a，而用this。例如：

　　i)I was looking the other way, you know.when this bus came past and whoosh!

　　ii)I can't come. I've got this cold.

　　b)Hey 用来引起某人的注意，相当于汉语里的“喂”。

　　c)Whoosh 用来描写水溅起来的声音。

　　PRONUNCIATION CORNER

　　请注意，was和were在过去进行时里，通常足不重读的。例如：

　　What were you doing at five o'clock?

　　- I was waiting.
