　　Good morning, ladies and gentlemen . Although I have no experience with English teaching here in China, I have been teaching English in Singapore for nearly 30 years. Also, since 1974 I have been undertaking research on the varieties of English spoken in Singapore and the functions of English in that highly multilingual nation.

　　1. Also, since 1974 I have been undertaking research on the varieties of English spoken in Singapore and the functions of English in that highly multilingual nation.

　　2. As a nation, Singapore is almost at the other extreme in size and population from China, 2.5 million people on an island, about 27 kilometers east to west and about 22 from north to south.

　　3. But its small size makes it a very convenient place in which to investigate English under Chinese influence. 76 % of the population are Chinese, 14% Malay and 7% Indian. (省略)

　　4. English is most unlikely to become localized in the same way. It is unlikely that Chinese will communicate with one another in English except in language learning situations.

　　5. However, some of the Chinese influences which have surfaced in Singapore English are possibly ones which need to be taken into account in the preparation of language teaching programs.
