Hunting for a job late last year, lawyer GantRedmon stumbledacross CareerBuilder, a jobdatabase on the Internet. He searched it withnosuccess but was attracted by the site’s“personalsearch agent”. It’s an interactive featurethat lets visitors key in job criteria suchas location, title, and salary, then E-mails them when a matchingposition isposted in the database. Some sites design their agents to tempt job hunters to return. WhenCareerSite’s agentsends out messages to those who have signed up for itsservice, for example, it includes onlythree potential jobs—those itconsiders the best matches. There may be more matches in thedatabase; jobhunters will have to visit the site again to find them—and they do.“On the dayafter we send our messages, we see a sharp increase inour traffic,” says Seth Peets, vicepresident of marketing for CareerSite。

Even those who aren’t hunting for jobs may find search agents worthwhile.
