  [00:28.69]You will hear

  [00:29.35]the mini-lecture ONCE ONLY.

  [00:31.42]While listening to the mini-lecture,

  [00:33.46]please complete the gap-filling task

[00:35.56]on ANSWER SHEET ONE and write

  [00:38.23]NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS

  [00:39.82]for each gap.

[00:41.02]Make sure the word(s) you fill in

  [00:44.80]is (are) both grammatically

  [00:47.11]and semantically acceptable.

[00:49.69]You may use the blank sheet

  [00:51.54]for note-taking.

  [00:52.47]You have THIRTY seconds

  [00:54.35]to preview the gap-filling task.

  [01:26.75]Now listen to the mini-lecture.

  [01:28.62]When it is over,

[01:30.20]you will be given THREE minutes

  [01:31.77]to check your work.

  [01:33.11]How to Build Your Vocabulary

  [01:35.15]Effectively

  [01:36.48]Good morning. In today's lecture,

  [01:39.26]we shall discuss the strategies

  [01:41.27]of learning English vocabulary.

  [01:43.50]When we talk about

  [01:44.68]learning English,

  [01:45.83]we usually mention

  [01:47.07]the four basic skills—

  [01:48.62]listening, reading,

  [01:49.77]speaking and writing.

  [01:51.34]However, all of these skills

  [01:53.26]cannot be sharpened

  [01:54.38]without vocabulary.

  [01:55.95]While there are not

  [01:57.66]any magic shortcuts

  [01:59.21]to learn words,

  [02:00.34]the larger

  [02:00.98]your vocabulary becomes,

  [02:02.61]the easier it will be

  [02:04.16]to connect a new word

  [02:05.37]with the words

  [02:06.17]you already know,

  [02:07.05]and thus remember its meaning.

[02:09.24]So your learning speed, or pace,

  [02:12.56]should increase

  [02:13.20]as your vocabulary grows.

  [02:15.08]There are some basic steps

  [02:16.88]to build your vocabulary

  [02:18.32]effectively.

  [02:19.41]First of all,

  [02:20.72]be aware of words.

  [02:22.51]Many people are surprised

  [02:24.47]when they are told

  [02:25.76]they have small vocabularies.

  [02:27.10]They protest

[02:28.45]that they read all the time.

  [02:30.33]This shows that reading alone

  [02:32.03]may not be enough

[02:33.47]to make you learn new words.

  [02:35.50]When we read a novel,

  [02:37.41]for instance,

[02:38.21]there is usually a strong urge

[02:40.20]to get on with the story

  [02:41.59]and skip over unfamiliar

  [02:43.08]or perhaps vaguely known words.

  [02:45.79]But while it is obvious

  [02:47.37]when a word is

  [02:48.41]totally unknown to you,

  [02:50.12]you have to be

  [02:51.07]especially aware of words

  [02:52.56]that seem familiar to you

  [02:54.71]but whose precise meanings

  [02:56.66]you may not really know.

  [02:58.08]Instead of avoiding these words,

  [03:00.30]you will need

[03:01.13]to take a closer look at them.

  [03:02.96]First,

  [03:03.85]try to guess at a word's meaning

  [03:05.66]from its context—

  [03:06.96]that is,

  [03:07.98]the sense of the passage

  [03:09.28]in which it appears.

[03:10.98]If you focus on learning words

  [03:13.15]in the context

  [03:14.13]where you're most likely

  [03:15.30]to find them,

  [03:16.20]you're more likely

  [03:17.01]to recognize them

  [03:18.09]when you encounter them

[03:19.27]or need to use them again.

  [03:20.98]Second,

[03:21.97]if you have a dictionary on hand,

  [03:24.35]look up the word's meaning

  [03:26.17]immediately.

  [03:26.82]This may slow down

  [03:28.36]your reading somewhat,

  [03:29.93]but your improved understanding

  [03:31.98]of each new word

  [03:33.13]will eventually speed

  [03:34.35]your learning of other words,

  [03:36.30]making reading easier.

  [03:38.49]Third, make a daily practice

  [03:41.15]of noting words

  [03:41.81]of interest to you

  [03:42.86]for further study

  [03:44.27]whenever you are reading,

  [03:45.67]listening to the radio,

  [03:46.95]talking to friends,

  [03:48.27]or watching television.

  [03:50.70]Second, read as often

  [03:53.17]and as much as possible.

  [03:54.64]When you have become

  [03:56.04]more aware of words,

  [03:57.63]reading is

  [03:58.50]the next important step

  [03:59.84]to increase

  [04:00.64]your knowledge of words,

  [04:02.02]because that is

  [04:03.20]how you will find

  [04:04.32]most of the words

  [04:05.31]you should be learning.

[04:06.32]It is also the best way

  [04:08.39]to check on words

  [04:09.68]you have already learned.

[04:10.89]When you come across a word

  [04:13.02]you have recently studied,

  [04:14.48]and you understand it,

  [04:15.88]it proves

[04:16.83]that you have learned its meaning.

  [04:19.19]Then what should you read?

  [04:21.20]Whatever interests you—

[04:22.93]whatever makes you want to read.

  [04:24.98]If you like sports,

  [04:26.38]read the sports page

  [04:27.92]of the newspapers;

  [04:29.15]read magazines

  [04:29.99]like Sports Illustrated;

  [04:31.69]read books

  [04:33.28]about your favorite athletes.

  [04:34.61]If you are interested

  [04:36.42]in interior decorating,

  [04:38.78]read a magazine

  [04:39.65]like House Beautiful—

  [04:41.02]read it,

  [04:41.92]don't just look at

  [04:43.02]the photographs.

  [04:44.14]Often people with

  [04:46.05]very small vocabularies

  [04:47.16]don't enjoy reading at all.

[04:49.29]It's more of a chore for them

  [04:51.15]than a pleasure

  [04:51.93]because they don't understand

  [04:54.02]many of the words.

  [04:54.89]If this is the way

  [04:56.74]you feel about reading,

  [04:58.24]try reading easier things.

  [05:00.35]Newspapers are usually easier

  [05:02.97]than magazines;

  [05:04.50]a magazine like Reader's Digest

  [05:06.77]is easier to read

  [05:08.37]than The Atlantic Monthly.

  [05:10.00]There is no point

  [05:11.46]in trying to read something

  [05:13.68]you simply are not able

  [05:14.66]to understand

  [05:15.63]or are not interested in.

  [05:17.53]The important idea is

  [05:19.66]to find things

  [05:21.13]you can enjoy to read,

  [05:22.14]and to read as often

  [05:23.55]and as much as possible

  [05:25.05]with the idea

  [05:26.25]of learning new words

  [05:27.71]always in mind.

  [05:29.34]Third, use a dictionary.

  [05:32.03]Keep it where you usually

  [05:33.63]do your reading at home.

[05:34.82]You are more likely to use it

[05:37.26]if you do not have to get it

  [05:38.83]from another room.

  [05:39.69]At work,

[05:40.85]there may be a good dictionary

  [05:42.92]available for your use.

  [05:44.63]At home,

[05:45.75]most people do not have a big,

  [05:48.14]unabridged dictionary;

  [05:49.33]however,

  [05:50.17]one of the smaller collegiate

  [05:51.98]dictionaries

[05:52.67]would be fine to start with.

  [05:54.43]Remember, words can have

  [05:56.70]more than one meaning,

  [05:58.01]and the meaning

  [05:59.01]you need for the word

  [06:00.19]you are looking up

[06:01.27]may not be the first one

  [06:03.02]given in your dictionary.

  [06:04.91]Even if it is,

[06:06.36]the other meanings of the word

  [06:07.78]will help you understand

  [06:09.21]the different ways

  [06:09.84]the word is used.

  [06:11.41]Also, the word's history,

  [06:13.41]usually given near

  [06:14.73]the beginning of the entry,

  [06:16.22]can often give

  [06:17.16]a fascinating picture

  [06:18.38]of the way

  [06:19.41]the word has developed

  [06:20.75]its current meaning.

[06:21.83]This will add to the pleasure

  [06:24.11]of learning the word

[06:25.16]as well as help you remember it.

  [06:27.40]Fourth,

  [06:28.33]study and review regularly.

  [06:30.97]Once you have begun

  [06:32.51]looking up words

  [06:33.51]and you know

  [06:34.47]which ones to study,

  [06:35.42]vocabulary building

  [06:36.81]is simply a matter of

  [06:38.58]reviewing the words regularly

  [06:39.87]until you fix them

  [06:41.16]in your memory.

  [06:42.23]This is best done

  [06:43.93]by setting aside

  [06:45.16]a specific amount of time

  [06:46.74]each day

  [06:47.28]for vocabulary study.

  [06:49.14]During that time

[06:50.60]you can look up new words

[06:52.33]you have noted during the day

  [06:53.83]and review old words

  [06:55.10]in the process of learning.

  [06:56.87]Set a goal

  [06:58.34]for the number of words

  [06:59.70]you would like to learn

  [07:00.74]and by what date,

  [07:01.84]and arrange your schedule

  [07:03.70]accordingly.

  [07:04.69]In order to review words

  [07:06.46]effectively,

[07:07.27]all the information on a word

[07:09.78]should be kept in one place—

  [07:11.81]in a notebook, for example,

  [07:13.57]or on an index card.

  [07:16.13]Index cards are convenient

[07:17.95]because the words can be placed

  [07:20.02]in alphabetical order,

  [07:21.42]which makes them easy

  [07:23.18]to find when reviewing;

  [07:24.61]and the cards

[07:26.24]can be carried around with you,

[07:27.72]so you can study them anywhere.

  [07:30.04]OK, today we have focused

  [07:32.96]on four basic steps

  [07:34.59]to assist us

  [07:35.61]in the vocabulary-building

  [07:36.69]process.

[07:38.12]Next time, we will continue on

  [07:40.08]how to use

  [07:40.76]vocabulary building aids

[07:42.89]such as books, tapes, or CDs.

  [07:45.13]Thanks for your attention.

  [07:48.37]Now, you have THREE minutes

  [07:50.12]to check your work.
