[00:23.76]MINI-LECTURE 7
[00:25.61]In this section
[00:26.89]you will hear a mini-lecture.
[00:28.53]You will hear
[00:29.53]the mini-lecture ONCE ONLY.
[00:31.55]While listening to the mini-lecture,
[00:33.85]please complete the gap-filling task
[00:36.14]on ANSWER SHEET ONE and write
[00:38.34]NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS
[00:39.83]for each gap.
[00:41.98]Make sure the word(s) you fill in
[00:45.14]is (are) both grammatically
[00:47.26]and semantically acceptable.
[00:50.16]You may use the blank sheet
[00:51.74]for note-taking.
[00:53.17]You have THIRTY seconds
[00:54.86]to preview the gap-filling task.
[01:27.13]Now listen to the mini-lecture.
[01:29.14]When it is over,
[01:30.68]you will be given THREE minutes
[01:32.04]to check your work.
[01:33.99]Power Learning
[01:35.59]Good morning.
[01:36.64]Today I'd like to share some ideas
[01:38.61]about power learning.
[01:40.87]There are no shortcuts
[01:42.80]about learning,
[01:43.82]but there are some
[01:44.56]proven study skills
[01:45.72]that can really help.
[01:47.34]Certain dependable skills
[01:49.21]have made the difference
[01:50.55]between disappointment
[01:52.07]and success for generations
[01:54.00]of students.
[01:55.10]These techniques won't
[01:56.83]free you from work,
[01:58.13]but they will make you work
[01:59.74]far more productively.
[02:01.46]They include
[02:02.55]three important areas:
[02:04.07]time control,
[02:05.66]classroom note-taking,
[02:07.11]and textbook study.
[02:09.21]First, let's talk about time control.
[02:12.78]Success in college depends on
[02:14.34]time control.
[02:16.15]Time control means
[02:17.07]that you deliberately organize
[02:19.08]and plan your time,
[02:20.78]instead of letting it drift by.
[02:23.07]Planning means that you should
[02:24.82]never be faced
[02:25.12]with an overdue term paper
[02:27.28]or a cram session the night
[02:29.23]before a test.
[02:30.60]Three steps are involved
[02:32.13]in time control.
[02:33.66]First, you should prepare
[02:35.39]a large monthly calendar.
[02:37.34]Buy a calendar
[02:38.50]with a large white block around
[02:40.63]each date.
[02:42.01]At the beginning
[02:42.72]of the college semester,
[02:44.14]circle important dates
[02:45.43]on this calendar.
[02:46.96]Circle the days on
[02:48.59]which tests are scheduled;
[02:49.83]circle the days
[02:50.98]when papers are due.
[02:52.56]This calendar can also be used
[02:54.75]to schedule study plans.
[02:56.92]At the beginning of the week,
[02:58.61]you can jot down your plans
[03:00.53]for each day.
[03:01.75]Hang this calendar
[03:03.21]where you will see it every day.
[03:05.71]The second step in time control
[03:07.70]is to have a weekly study schedule
[03:09.69]for the semester—a chart
[03:11.97]that covers all the days
[03:13.28]of the week
[03:14.10]and all the waking hours
[03:15.50]in each day.
[03:17.13]On your own schedule,
[03:18.17]fill in all the fixed hours
[03:19.97]in each day—
[03:21.46]hours for meals, classes, job,
[03:23.93]and travel time.
[03:25.01]Next, mark time blocks
[03:26.90]that you can realistically use
[03:29.01]for study each day.
[03:30.74]Keep in mind
[03:32.13]that you should not block off time
[03:34.01]that you do not truly intend
[03:35.91]to use for study.
[03:37.30]Otherwise, your schedule will be
[03:39.53]a meaningless gimmick.
[03:40.90]Also, remember
[03:42.60]that you should allow time
[03:44.40]for rest and relaxation.
[03:46.67]You will be happy,
[03:47.75]and able to accomplish the most,
[03:50.04]when you have time
[03:51.59]for both work and play.
[03:53.73]The third step in time control is
[03:56.26]to make a daily
[03:57.50]or weekly to-do list.
[03:59.34]This may be the most
[04:00.72]valuable time-control method
[04:02.60]you ever use.
[04:03.74]On this list, write down the things
[04:06.35]you need to do
[04:07.19]for the following day
[04:08.24]or the following week.
[04:09.85]If you choose
[04:10.89]to write a weekly list,
[04:12.34]do it on Sunday night.
[04:14.32]If you choose to write a daily list,
[04:16.82]do it the night before.
[04:18.69]The second area for your success
[04:21.39]at college is classroom note-taking.
[04:24.33]One of the most important
[04:25.86]single things
[04:26.64]you can do to perform well
[04:28.20]in a college course is
[04:29.91]to take effective class notes.
[04:32.03]The following hints
[04:33.50]should help you
[04:34.62]become a better note-taker.
[04:36.32]First, attend class faithfully.
[04:39.50]Your alternatives—
[04:41.18]reading the text,
[04:42.38]reading someone else's notes,
[04:43.59]or both-cannot substitute
[04:46.03]for the class experience
[04:47.67]of hearing ideas in person
[04:49.93]as someone presents them
[04:51.20]to you.
[04:52.12]Also, in class lectures
[04:54.36]and discussions,
[04:55.40]your instructor typically presents
[04:57.70]and develops the main ideas
[04:58.91]and facts of the course—
[05:01.38]the ones you will be expected
[05:02.52]to know on exams.
[05:04.40]Another valuable hint is
[05:05.96]to make use of abbreviations
[05:07.74]while taking notes.
[05:09.63]Using abbreviations saves time
[05:11.92]when you are trying
[05:13.10]to get down
[05:13.70]a great deal of information.
[05:15.31]Abbreviate terms
[05:16.72]that recur frequently
[05:18.49]in a lecture and put a key
[05:20.32]to your abbreviations
[05:21.94]at the top of your notes.
[05:23.41]If you use
[05:24.16]the same abbreviations
[05:25.80]all the time,
[05:27.23]you will soon develop a kind
[05:28.86]of personal shorthand
[05:30.33]that makes taking notes
[05:31.79]much easier.
[05:33.36]A third hint for taking notes
[05:35.04]is to be on the lookout
[05:36.60]for signals of importance.
[05:38.69]Always write down
[05:40.18]definitions and enumerations.
[05:42.83]Enumerations are lists of items.
[05:45.53]In your notes, always number
[05:47.85]enumerations.
[05:48.75]They will help
[05:49.98]you understand relationships
[05:51.22]among ideas and organize
[05:53.68]the material
[05:54.38]of the lecture.
[05:55.62]Next, be sure to write down
[05:57.66]the instructor's examples
[05:59.19]and mark them with an "e".
[06:00.96]The examples help
[06:02.50]you understand
[06:03.56]abstract points.
[06:05.45]If you do not write them down,
[06:07.34]you are likely
[06:08.16]to forget them later,
[06:09.66]when they are needed
[06:10.67]to make sense of an idea.
[06:12.85]Also, be sure to write down
[06:14.89]the connections between ideas.
[06:17.86]Too many students merely
[06:19.18]copy terms the instructors
[06:21.16]put on the board.
[06:23.00]They forget that, as time passes,
[06:25.48]the details that serve as
[06:26.89]connecting bridges
[06:28.16]between ideas quickly fade.
[06:30.49]Finally, try to get down
[06:32.69]a written record of each class.
[06:34.64]You must do this
[06:35.98]because forgetting begins
[06:37.72]almost immediately.
[06:39.76]Studies have shown
[06:40.87]that within two weeks you
[06:42.45]are likely to have forgotten
[06:43.87]80 percent or more
[06:45.51]of what you have heard.
[06:47.62]And in four weeks you are lucky
[06:49.87]if 5 percent remains!
[06:52.03]So it is absolutely essential
[06:55.03]that you write down
[06:56.26]what you hear in class.
[06:57.96]And the more complete
[06:59.09]your notes are,
[06:59.92]the more you are likely to learn.
[07:02.16]The final area
[07:03.30]for a successful study life
[07:05.27]is textbook study.
[07:06.93]In many college courses,
[07:09.15]success means being able to read
[07:11.29]and study a textbook skillfully.
[07:14.12]For many students,
[07:15.14]unfortunately, textbooks are heavy going.
[07:18.47]After an hour or two of study,
[07:20.77]the textbook material is
[07:22.98]as formless
[07:23.71]and as hard to understand as ever.
[07:25.54]But there is a way to attack
[07:27.87]even the most difficult textbook
[07:29.85]and make sense of it.
[07:31.48]Use a sequence
[07:32.70]in which you preview a chapter,
[07:34.75]mark it, take notes on it,
[07:37.03]and then study the notes.
[07:39.15]Previewing a selection is
[07:41.25]an important first step
[07:42.77]to understanding.
[07:44.15]Taking the time to preview
[07:45.86]a section or chapter can give you
[07:48.59]a bird's-eye view of the way
[07:50.43]the material is organized.
[07:52.36]You will have a sense of
[07:53.34]where you are beginning,
[07:54.75]what you will cover,
[07:55.99]and where you will end.
[07:57.73]Then, you should
[07:59.08]mark a textbook selection
[08:00.66]at the same time
[08:01.54]that you read it
[08:02.40]through carefully.
[08:03.73]Use a felt-tip highlighter
[08:05.71]to shade material
[08:07.04]that seems important,
[08:08.39]or use a ballpoint pen
[08:10.34]and put symbols in the margin
[08:12.46]next to the material: stars, checks,
[08:15.27]or NB.
[08:16.79]You should try to find main ideas
[08:19.47]by looking for clues:
[08:21.22]definitions and examples, enumerations,
[08:24.71]and emphasis words.
[08:26.15]Next, you should take notes.
[08:29.08]Go through the chapter
[08:30.64]a second time, rereading
[08:32.08]the most important parts.
[08:34.04]Try to write down the main ideas
[08:36.57]in a simple outline form.
[08:38.88]Finally, study your notes,
[08:41.54]using repeated self-testing.
[08:44.09]Do not simply read your notes;
[08:47.22]keep looking away and seeing
[08:48.34]if you can recite them to yourself.
[08:51.15]This self-testing is the key
[08:53.21]to effective learning.
[08:54.79]OK, take a minute now
[08:57.08]and reflect
[08:57.67]on your own study habits.
[08:59.31]Do you practice many
[09:00.98]or any of these skills
[09:02.33]in order to control your time,
[09:04.28]take effective classroom notes,
[09:05.92]and learn from your textbooks?
[09:08.83]The skills are not magic,
[09:11.05]but they are too valuable
[09:12.78]to ignore.
[09:13.93]Use them carefully and consistently,
[09:16.71]and they will make success
[09:18.20]in school possible for you.
[09:20.73]Now, you have THREE minutes
[09:22.37]to check your work.
