  [01:33.47]Sexism in English

  [01:35.21]Good morning, everyone.

  [01:36.71]Today we will talk

  [01:38.50]about sexism in English.

  [01:40.63]As we all know,

  [01:41.56]sexism in English language

[01:43.30]has existed for a long time,

  [01:45.96]which is the reflection

  [01:47.59]of the traditional ethics

[01:49.04]that men are superior to women.

[01:51.26]Today I will focus on the causes

  [01:53.83]of sexism in English language,

  [01:56.74]and I will discuss it

  [01:58.20]from four aspects:

  [01:59.85]the cultural factor,

  [02:01.20]the physiological factor,

  [02:03.04]the social factor

  [02:04.31]and the psychological factor.

  [02:06.57]First, let's have a look

  [02:07.74]at the cultural factor.

  [02:09.12]The Holy Bible is actually

  [02:11.39]a book of men.

  [02:12.43]As Christianity is

  [02:14.50]such a powerful religion

  [02:16.09]in Western countries,

  [02:17.13]it is unreasonable to deny

  [02:19.29]that this helps to set

  [02:21.11]and consolidate the inferiority

  [02:23.64]of women.

  [02:24.47]From the Holy Bible,

  [02:26.08]we know the man came

  [02:27.39]to the world first

  [02:28.77]while the woman was made

[02:30.07]from one of the man's ribs.

[02:31.66]From the order of the birth,

  [02:33.56]it is obvious to see

  [02:35.09]the different importance

  [02:36.29]of men and women.

[02:37.50]In addition, the first sin is

  [02:40.25]also committed

  [02:41.01]by the woman,

  [02:41.70]who was seduced

[02:42.70]by the snake into eating the fruits

[02:44.83]of the tree of the knowledge

  [02:46.21]of good and evil

[02:47.39]and having the man eat them too.

[02:49.85]At last, the woman was punished

[02:52.06]to bring forth children in pain

[02:53.97]and was ruled over by the man.

  [02:56.32]From above,

  [02:57.92]the superiority of men

  [02:59.65]and inferiority of women

  [03:01.64]is clearly seen.

  [03:02.71]Second, we'll move

  [03:04.86]to the physiological factor.

  [03:06.75]For extended work

  [03:08.72]and life together,

[03:09.82]people realized that men are tall

  [03:12.61]in stature, strong in muscle

  [03:14.46]and robust in physique.

  [03:16.59]In contrast to men,

  [03:18.04]women are small in stature,

  [03:20.08]weak in physique

  [03:21.28]and have more fat

  [03:22.42]and less muscle than men.

  [03:24.16]Women also mature more rapidly.

[03:26.85]In a word, men are stronger

  [03:29.27]than women.

  [03:30.26]This determines that men

  [03:32.54]play a more important role

  [03:34.08]in social and economic lives.

[03:36.56]A man's job is to work outside

  [03:39.62]but a woman's job is

  [03:41.04]to stay at home,

  [03:42.43]doing the housework

[03:43.22]and taking care of the children.

  [03:44.95]Women are treated

  [03:46.31]as the weaker ones

[03:47.62]and they realize their own values

  [03:49.94]through their marriages to men.

[03:51.90]At last, women are lower in status.

[03:55.46]They have to depend on men

  [03:57.70]and are dominated by men.

  [03:59.73]Gradually, people begin

  [04:01.08]to discriminate against women

[04:03.23]and think that they are inferior

  [04:05.54]in intelligence.

  [04:06.92]This wrong perspective

  [04:08.75]forms slowly

  [04:09.63]and reflects in language.

[04:11.66]Third, I'll focus on the social factor,

  [04:14.89]or we might say

  [04:15.88]the division of labor.

  [04:17.26]Feminists all claim

[04:19.13]that we live in a patriarchal society:

[04:21.23]a society of men, ruled by men

  [04:24.50]and for men.

  [04:25.62]Patriarchy depicts men

  [04:27.76]as the perfect norm against

  [04:29.58]which women are measured

  [04:30.98]and found lacking.

  [04:32.27]Both the Western

  [04:33.78]and Eastern societies use sex,

  [04:36.18]to one degree or another,

  [04:37.87]in allocating tasks, activities, rights,

  [04:40.74]and responsibilities.

  [04:41.98]As for the job done

  [04:43.75]by men and women,

  [04:44.74]there is a long-stereotyped notion

  [04:47.52]of what they can do.

  [04:49.02]In history, there has been

  [04:50.66]a division of labor—

[04:51.85]a division in which women's place

  [04:54.35]was restrained at home

  [04:55.82]for housework and childcare

  [04:57.86]while men worked outside

  [04:59.87]being the breadwinner.

  [05:01.30]At last, men had dominance

  [05:03.71]over women,

  [05:04.40]and women had to

  [05:05.42]be dependent on men.

  [05:07.13]This was

  [05:08.41]the turning point for women.

[05:10.15]From then on, in paternal society,

  [05:13.06]slavery society

  [05:14.04]and capitalist society,

  [05:16.22]women had been

  [05:17.31]at the bottom of society.

[05:19.09]In the long and endless course

  [05:21.72]of history,

  [05:22.45]sexism against women

  [05:23.79]has been accumulated.

[05:25.44]It is the division of labor

[05:27.76]that leads to different social status.

[05:30.59]This has been clear in ancient

  [05:32.84]and modern society.

  [05:34.31]Later,

  [05:35.06]in addition to domestic work,

  [05:37.17]women began

  [05:37.92]to enter the paid workplace.

  [05:39.98]However,

  [05:41.01]even though half of women

  [05:42.54]are employed outside the home,

  [05:44.91]the belief persists

  [05:46.02]that a woman's role is primarily

  [05:48.80]that of a wife and a mother.

  [05:50.45]Due to women's

  [05:51.66]relative physical weakness

  [05:53.60]and lower

  [05:54.31]educational background,

  [05:55.67]they do primarily

  [05:56.82]the low-status,

  [05:58.17]low-paying jobs.

  [05:59.90]Although men also

  [06:01.05]have family roles,

  [06:02.40]they are defined primarily

  [06:04.43]by their economic

  [06:05.72]or occupational position.

  [06:08.12]Thus sexism in the society

  [06:10.06]has been in existence,

  [06:11.64]the embodiment

  [06:13.07]of which is necessarily sexism

  [06:15.38]in language.

  [06:16.39]Finally, let's look

  [06:18.53]at the psychological factor.

  [06:20.60]Because of the social

  [06:22.11]and cultural factors,

  [06:23.16]women are always considered

  [06:25.24]to be the weak.

  [06:26.21]People treat women

  [06:27.59]as men's appendages.

[06:28.92]They educate men to be manly,

  [06:31.78]decisive, and brave

  [06:33.43]while women are required

  [06:34.15]to be polite, conservative,

  [06:36.09]obedient, and gentle.

  [06:37.62]Because women are

[06:38.95]in subordinate status in the society,

  [06:42.03]they have to constrain

  [06:43.50]their emotions

[06:44.09]and give up their own needs

  [06:45.81]to satisfy those of men.

  [06:47.99]As time passes,

  [06:49.68]women pay more attention

  [06:51.09]to the elegance and standard

  [06:53.42]of language than men.

  [06:54.99]They use more pleasant

[06:56.06]and polite words in the hope

  [06:58.00]that they can receive others'

  [06:59.48]approval.

  [07:00.43]And they are taught

  [07:01.68]to speak softly,

  [07:02.63]to avoid contradicting others,

  [07:05.25]and to be obedient

  [07:06.28]in communication.

  [07:07.89]They mould themselves

  [07:09.47]to be inferior

  [07:10.46]in their sub-consciousness.

  [07:12.39]Therefore, women try their best

  [07:14.65]to strengthen their social status

[07:16.51]through their speech than men do.

  [07:19.03]The lower women's position is,

  [07:21.27]the more polite they are

  [07:22.45]in the presence of others.

[07:24.49]And the standard of the language

  [07:26.31]they use can show

  [07:27.50]their submission

  [07:28.45]and politeness.

[07:29.58]This also suggests that women are

[07:33.14]in a lower position in the society.

  [07:35.07]With this, we're coming

[07:36.83]to the end of today's lecture.

  [07:38.99]Next time, we'll talk

  [07:40.41]about the phenomena

  [07:41.42]of sexism in English language.

  [07:44.09]Thanks for your listening.

  [07:45.34]Wish my explanation may

  [07:47.47]give you some help.

  [07:48.70]See you next time.

  [07:50.94]Now, you have THREE minutes

  [07:52.64]to check your work.
