[00:23.42]MINI-LECTURE 12
[00:25.56]In this section
[00:26.42]you will hear a mini-lecture.
[00:28.50]You will hear
[00:29.25]the mini-lecture ONCE ONLY.
[00:31.31]While listening to the mini-lecture,
[00:33.07]please complete the gap-filling task
[00:35.35]on ANSWER SHEET ONE and write
[00:37.63]NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS
[00:39.46]for each gap.
[00:41.47]Make sure the word(s) you fill in
[00:44.61]is (are) both grammatically
[00:46.82]and semantically acceptable.
[00:49.85]You may use the blank sheet
[00:51.37]for note-taking.
[00:52.49]You have THIRTY seconds
[00:54.01]to preview the gap-filling task.
[01:26.47]Now listen to the mini-lecture.
[01:28.14]When it is over,
[01:29.52]you will be given THREE minutes
[01:31.21]to check your work.
[01:33.07]How to Do Well on
[01:34.21]a Job Interview
[01:36.00]Good morning.
[01:36.65]Today I'd like to share my views
[01:39.54]on how to do well
[01:40.82]on a job interview.
[01:41.89]To many people,
[01:43.89]the job interview is a confusing,
[01:46.13]humiliating,
[01:46.88]and nerve-racking experience.
[01:49.67]First of all, you have to wait
[01:51.74]for your appointment
[01:53.07]in an outer room,
[01:54.36]often trapped there
[01:55.42]with other people
[01:56.39]applying for the same job.
[01:58.62]Then you are called
[02:00.10]into the interviewer's office.
[02:01.72]Faced with a complete stranger,
[02:03.84]you have to try to act both cool
[02:06.46]and friendly as you are asked
[02:08.85]all sorts of questions.
[02:10.30]Finally, you go home
[02:11.80]and wait for days
[02:13.38]and even weeks.
[02:14.94]If you get the job, great.
[02:16.52]But if you don't,
[02:17.99]you're rarely given
[02:19.31]any reason why.
[02:20.49]The job-interview "game"
[02:22.37]may not be much fun,
[02:24.10]but it is a game you can win
[02:26.16]if you play it right.
[02:27.36]The name of the game
[02:29.35]is standing out from the crowd—
[02:31.20]in a positive way.
[02:32.68]Here are guidelines
[02:34.48]to help you play
[02:35.62]the interview game
[02:36.54]to win.
[02:37.32]Firstly, present yourself as a winner.
[02:40.90]For example,
[02:41.97]the way you dress, speak,
[02:43.53]and move gives the interviewer
[02:45.07]more information about you
[02:47.05]than you would think possible.
[02:49.45]You doubt that this is true.
[02:51.25]Consider this:
[02:52.82]a professional job recruiter,
[02:54.78]meeting a series of job applicants,
[02:57.06]was asked to signal the moment
[02:59.28]he decided not to hire
[03:01.07]each applicant.
[03:02.10]The thumbs-down decision was
[03:04.02]often made in less than
[03:05.90]45 seconds—
[03:06.96]even before the applicant
[03:08.84]thought the interview had begun.
[03:10.93]How can you keep from
[03:12.43]being a victim
[03:13.22]of an instant "no"decision?
[03:15.53]To begin with, dress appropriately.
[03:18.39]This means business clothing:
[03:21.12]usually a suit and tie
[03:23.33]or a conservative dress or skirt suit.
[03:26.01]Don't wear casual student clothing.
[03:28.57]On the other hand,
[03:29.74]don't overdress:
[03:31.22]you're going to a job interview,
[03:33.49]not a party.
[03:34.33]Furthermore, pay attention
[03:36.39]to your grooming.
[03:37.95]Untidy hair, body odor,
[03:40.08]unshined shoes, a hanging hem,
[03:42.64]stains on your tie,
[03:44.24]excessive makeup or cologne,
[03:46.42]a sloppy job of shaving—
[03:48.40]if the interviewer notices
[03:50.59]any of these,
[03:51.64]your prospect of being hired
[03:53.85]takes a probably fatal hit.
[03:56.61]Moreover, look alert, poised,
[03:59.56]and friendly.
[04:00.31]When that interviewer looks into
[04:02.49]the waiting room
[04:03.44]and calls your name,
[04:04.72]he or she is getting a first impression
[04:07.29]of your behavior.
[04:08.48]If you're slouched in your chair,
[04:10.53]dozing or lost in the pages
[04:12.75]of a magazine,
[04:13.42]if you look up with
[04:14.87]an annoyed "Huh?",
[04:16.42]he or she will not be favorably
[04:18.64]impressed.
[04:19.47]What will earn you points
[04:21.95]is rising promptly
[04:23.12]and walking briskly
[04:24.32]toward the interviewer.
[04:25.80]Smiling and looking
[04:27.36]directly at that person,
[04:29.16]extend your hand
[04:30.57]to shake his or hers,
[04:32.22]saying, "I'm Lesley Brown.
[04:34.30]Thank you for seeing me today."
[04:35.81]Finally,
[04:37.10]expect to make a little small talk.
[04:39.68]This is not a waste of time;
[04:42.25]it is the interviewer's way
[04:43.87]of checking your ability
[04:45.71]to be politely sociable,
[04:47.52]and it is your opportunity
[04:49.39]to cement the good impression
[04:51.64]you've already made.
[04:53.17]The key is to follow
[04:55.05]the interviewer's lead.
[04:56.43]If he or she wants to chat
[04:58.76]about the weather
[04:59.64]for a few minutes, do so.
[05:01.33]But don't drag it out;
[05:03.10]as soon as you get a signal
[05:05.04]that it's time to talk about the job,
[05:06.82]be ready to get down to business.
[05:09.74]After you settle down in the room
[05:12.22]for your interview,
[05:13.35]next, get ready
[05:14.60]for the interviewer's questions.
[05:16.92]The same questions come up
[05:18.83]again and again
[05:19.85]in many job interviews.
[05:21.62]You should plan ahead
[05:23.12]for all these questions!
[05:24.60]Then practice
[05:26.21]reciting the answers
[05:27.16]to yourself.
[05:29.03]Only in this way
[05:30.26]are you going to be prepared.
[05:31.95]Here are common questions,
[05:33.97]what they really mean,
[05:36.14]and how to answer them.
[05:37.63]The first common question is
[05:39.94]"Tell me about yourself."
[05:41.62]This question is raised to see
[05:43.81]how organized you are.
[05:45.15]The wrong way to answer
[05:47.31]it is to launch into a wandering,
[05:49.82]disjointed response or—
[05:51.92]worse yet—
[05:52.88]to demand defensively,
[05:54.93]"What do you want to know?"
[05:56.32]or "What do you mean?"
[05:57.44]When this question comes up,
[05:59.72]you should be prepared
[06:00.83]to give a brief summary
[06:02.41]of your life
[06:02.96]and work experience—
[06:04.90]where you grew up,
[06:05.89]where your family lives now,
[06:08.00]where you went to school,
[06:09.60]what jobs you've had,
[06:10.87]and how you happen
[06:12.46]to be here now
[06:13.63]looking for the challenge
[06:14.65]of a new job.
[06:16.06]The second question may be
[06:18.45]"What are your strengths
[06:19.47]and weaknesses?"
[06:20.56]In talking about
[06:21.88]your strong points,
[06:23.51]mention traits
[06:24.71]that will serve you well
[06:26.21]in this particular job.
[06:27.45]If you are well organized,
[06:29.45]a creative problem-solver,
[06:30.99]a good team member,
[06:32.55]or a quick learner,
[06:33.85]be ready to describe specific ways
[06:36.34]those strengths have served you
[06:38.49]in the past.
[06:39.46]Don't make the mistake of saying,
[06:41.57]"I don't have any real weaknesses."
[06:44.01]You'll come across
[06:44.93]as more believable
[06:46.50]if you admit a flaw—
[06:48.03]but make it one
[06:49.35]that an employer
[06:50.09]might actually like.
[06:51.90]For instance,
[06:52.99]admit that you are a workaholic
[06:55.10]or a perfectionist.
[06:56.73]The third question
[06:58.30]may go like this:
[06:59.50]"Why should we hire you?"
[07:01.57]Remember that it is up to you
[07:03.51]to convince the interviewer
[07:05.35]that you're the man
[07:06.54]or woman for this job.
[07:08.28]If you just sit there
[07:10.32]and hope that the interviewer
[07:11.41]will magically discern
[07:13.00]your good qualities,
[07:14.36]you are likely to be disappointed.
[07:17.12]Don't be afraid to sell yourself.
[07:19.68]Tell the recruiter
[07:20.84]that from your research
[07:22.03]you have learned
[07:22.88]that the interviewer's company is
[07:24.66]one you would like to work for,
[07:26.67]and that you believe
[07:28.29]the company's needs
[07:29.21]and your skills are a great match.
[07:32.20]The final question may be
[07:33.89]"Do you have any questions?"
[07:35.57]This is the time
[07:37.17]to stress one last time
[07:38.78]how interested you are
[07:39.81]in this particular job.
[07:42.23]Ask a question or two
[07:43.45]about specific aspects of the job,
[07:45.88]pointing out again
[07:47.45]how well your talents
[07:49.17]and the company's needs
[07:50.10]are matched.
[07:51.09]Even if you're dying
[07:52.41]to know how much the job pays
[07:54.53]and how much vacation you get,
[07:56.24]don't ask.
[07:57.87]There will be time enough
[07:59.43]to cover those questions
[08:00.73]after you've been offered the job.
[08:02.88]Today, your task is to demonstrate
[08:05.71]what a good employee
[08:07.07]you would be.
[08:07.67]After the interview,
[08:09.62]it is necessary for you
[08:11.32]to send a thank-you note.
[08:12.81]Once you've gotten past
[08:14.80]the interview,
[08:15.43]there is one more chance for you
[08:17.32]to make a fine impression.
[08:19.15]As soon as you can—
[08:20.87]certainly no more than one
[08:22.23]or two days
[08:23.30]after the interview—
[08:24.91]write a note of thanks
[08:26.23]to your interviewer.
[08:27.46]In it, briefly remind him or her
[08:30.25]of when you came in
[08:31.44]and what job you applied for.
[08:34.04]As well as thanking
[08:35.74]the interviewer
[08:36.19]for seeing you,
[08:37.33]reaffirm your interest in the job
[08:39.68]and mention again
[08:41.36]why you think you are
[08:42.54]the best candidate for it.
[08:44.69]Make the note courteous,
[08:46.88]businesslike, and brief—
[08:47.98]just a paragraph or two.
[08:49.85]If the interviewer is wavering
[08:52.63]between several equally
[08:54.17]qualified candidates,
[08:55.29]such a note could tip the scales
[08:57.68]in your favor.
[08:58.57]To conclude,
[09:00.25]no amount of preparation
[09:02.02]is going to make interviewing
[09:04.01]for a job your favorite activity.
[09:06.64]But if you go in well-prepared
[09:09.36]as suggested-adjusting yourself
[09:11.44]both outside and inside—
[09:13.61]your potential employer
[09:14.87]can't help thinking highly of you.
[09:17.72]And the day will come
[09:19.45]when you are the one
[09:20.80]who wins the job.
[09:22.72]Now, you have THREE minutes
[09:24.44]to check your work.
