  [00:52.47]and semantically acceptable.

[00:55.72]You may use the blank sheet

  [00:56.78]for note-taking.

  [00:58.18]You have THIRTY seconds

  [00:59.63]to preview the gap-filling task.

  [01:31.97]Now listen to the mini-lecture.

  [01:33.99]When it is over,

[01:35.10]you will be given THREE minutes

  [01:37.27]to check your work.

  [01:38.35]Planning a Writing Lesson

  [01:40.14]Good morning, everyone.

  [01:41.56]Today we'll talk about

[01:42.85]how to plan a writing lesson.

  [01:45.10]Writing,

  [01:45.72]unlike speaking,

  [01:46.80]is not an ability

  [01:47.99]we acquire naturally,

  [01:49.43]even in our first language.

  [01:50.99]It needs a process

  [01:52.48]of learning and practicing.

  [01:53.76]Unless the second language learners

  [01:56.41]are explicitly taught

[01:58.01]how to write in the new language,

  [01:59.66]their writing skills

[02:00.76]are likely to get left behind

  [02:02.57]as their speaking skills progress.

  [02:04.87]But teaching writing

  [02:05.98]is not just about grammar,

  [02:07.91]spelling, or the mechanics

  [02:09.35]of the Roman alphabet.

[02:10.97]Learners also need to be aware of

  [02:12.82]and use the conventions

[02:15.22]of the genre in the new language.

  [02:17.50]First of all,

[02:18.58]we have to make it clear

  [02:19.92]what a genre is.

  [02:21.24]A genre can be anything

  [02:22.64]from a menu to a wedding invitation,

  [02:24.91]from a newspaper article

  [02:26.40]to an estate agent's description

  [02:28.03]of a house.

[02:29.47]Pieces of writing of the same genre

[02:31.80]share some features in terms of layout,

  [02:34.37]the level of formality,

  [02:35.85]and the usage of language.

  [02:37.62]However,

  [02:38.58]a genre may vary considerably

  [02:40.41]between cultures,

  [02:41.70]and even adult learners

[02:43.39]familiar with a range of genres

  [02:45.53]in their first language

[02:46.77]need to learn to use the conventions

  [02:48.66]of those genres in English.

  [02:50.62]In general,

[02:51.49]there are a couple of stages

[02:53.19]involved in the process of writing

[02:54.99]in accordance with a specific genre.

  [02:57.27]I don't necessarily include

  [02:58.55]all these stages

  [02:59.89]in every writing lesson,

[03:01.53]and the emphasis given to each stage

[03:03.34]may differ according to the genre

  [03:05.16]of the writing

  [03:06.15]and the time available.

  [03:07.46]As is often the case,

[03:08.82]generating ideas is the first stage

[03:11.43]of a process approach to writing.

[03:13.46]Even when producing a piece of writing

  [03:15.69]of a highly conventional genre,

[03:17.94]such as a letter of complaint,

  [03:19.86]using learners' own ideas

[03:21.94]can make the writing more memorable

  [03:23.77]and meaningful.

[03:25.16]Before writing a letter of complaint,

  [03:26.89]learners think about a situation

  [03:28.33]when they have complained

  [03:30.07]about faulty goods

  [03:31.44]or bad service

  [03:32.69]or have felt like complaining,

  [03:34.27]and tell a partner.

  [03:35.75]As the first stage

[03:37.08]of preparing to write an essay,

[03:38.90]I give learners the essay title

  [03:40.79]and pieces of scrap paper.

  [03:42.67]They have 3 minutes

  [03:43.70]to work alone,

  [03:44.75]writing one idea

  [03:45.86]on each piece of paper,

  [03:47.41]before comparing in groups.

  [03:48.87]Each group can then

  [03:50.25]present their 3 best ideas

  [03:51.90]to the class.

  [03:53.28]Then, there is another stage

  [03:54.77]taken from a process approach,

  [03:56.70]and it involves thinking about

[03:58.37]which of the many ideas generated

[04:00.52]are the most important or relevant,

  [04:03.11]and perhaps taking

  [04:04.62]a particular point of view.

[04:06.34]As part of the essay-writing process,

  [04:08.08]students in groups

  [04:09.49]put the ideas generated

  [04:11.24]in the previous stage

  [04:12.60]into a mind map.

  [04:14.05]The teacher then

[04:15.11]draws a mind map on the board,

[04:16.67]using ideas from the different groups.

  [04:19.29]At this stage

[04:20.41]he or she can also feed in

  [04:22.72]some useful collocations.

[04:24.21]This gives the learners the tools

[04:26.35]to better express their own ideas.

  [04:28.71]I tell my students

  [04:30.39]to write individually

  [04:31.79]for about 10 minutes

  [04:33.15]without stopping

  [04:34.11]and without worrying

  [04:35.20]about grammar or punctuation.

  [04:37.24]If they don't know a particular word,

[04:38.92]they write it in their first language.

  [04:41.15]This often helps learners

  [04:43.31]to further develop

  [04:44.34]some of the ideas

  [04:45.59]used during this stage.

  [04:47.26]Once the students

  [04:48.50]have got their own ideas,

  [04:49.76]and thought about

  [04:51.03]which are the most important

  [04:52.39]or relevant,

[04:53.48]I try to give them the tools

  [04:55.11]to express those ideas

  [04:56.65]in the most appropriate way.

  [04:58.43]The examination of model texts

  [05:00.71]is often prominent in product

  [05:02.97]or genre approaches to writing,

  [05:04.78]and will help raise awareness

[05:06.59]of the conventions of typical texts

  [05:08.60]of different genres in English.

  [05:10.97]I give learners in groups

  [05:12.77]several examples of a genre,

[05:14.54]and they use a genre analysis form

  [05:17.07]to identify the features

[05:18.71]and language they have in common.

  [05:21.03]This raises their awareness

[05:22.74]of the features of the genre

[05:24.24]and gives them some language "chunks"

[05:26.86]they can use in their own writing.

  [05:28.48]Learners are given an essay

[05:30.31]with the topic sentences taken out,

[05:32.68]and put them back in the right place.

  [05:35.00]This raises their awareness

[05:36.24]of the organization of the essay

[05:37.98]and the importance of topic sentences.

  [05:40.55]Once learners have seen

  [05:42.05]how the ideas are organized

[05:43.89]in typical examples of the genre,

  [05:45.72]they can go about

  [05:47.10]organizing their own ideas

  [05:48.57]in a similar way.

  [05:50.64]Students in groups

[05:51.92]draft a plan of their work,

  [05:53.93]including how many paragraphs

[05:55.93]and the main points of each paragraph.

[05:58.33]When preparing to write an essay,

[05:59.80]students group some of the ideas

  [06:01.67]produced earlier into main

  [06:04.02]and supporting statements.

  [06:05.37]In a pure process approach,

[06:06.84]the writer goes through several drafts

  [06:08.99]before producing a final version.

  [06:11.25]In practical terms,

  [06:12.40]and as part

  [06:14.07]of a general English course,

  [06:15.93]this is not always possible.

  [06:17.81]Nevertheless,

  [06:18.77]it may be helpful

  [06:19.67]to let students know beforehand

[06:21.71]if you are going to ask them

  [06:23.55]to write a second draft.

[06:24.99]This stage affords learners a chance

[06:27.62]to become aware of an audience

  [06:29.45]other than the teacher.

[06:30.99]If students are to write a second draft,

[06:32.83]I ask other learners to comment on

[06:35.23]what they liked or didn't like

  [06:37.19]about the piece of work,

  [06:38.52]or what they found unclear,

  [06:40.35]so that these comments

  [06:41.40]can be incorporated

  [06:42.61]into the second draft.

  [06:44.00]Finally,

  [06:44.89]when writing a final draft,

  [06:46.44]students should be encouraged

  [06:48.01]to check the details

  [06:49.20]of grammar and spelling,

[06:50.64]which may have taken a back seat

  [06:52.76]to ideas and organization

  [06:54.37]in the previous stages.

  [06:55.97]All right,

  [06:57.01]today we've illustrated

  [06:58.70]necessary stages

  [06:59.75]to plan a writing lesson.

  [07:01.45]By going through

[07:02.68]some or all of these stages,

  [07:04.71]learners use their own ideas

[07:06.25]to produce a piece of writing

  [07:08.08]that uses the conventions

  [07:09.71]of a genre appropriately.

  [07:11.29]And in so doing,

[07:13.08]they are asked to think about

  [07:14.53]the audience's expectations

  [07:16.04]of a piece of writing

  [07:17.47]of a particular genre,

  [07:19.14]and the impact

[07:20.14]of their writing on the reader.

  [07:21.84]In our next lecture,

  [07:22.96]we will get started

  [07:24.24]with a specific genre

  [07:25.44]and talk about

[07:26.40]how to write an academic paper.

  [07:28.19]Now, you have THREE minutes

  [07:30.38]to check your work.

  [10:32.76]This is the end of

  [10:33.53]Section A Mini-lecture.

  [10:37.13]SECTION B INTERVIEW

  [10:40.03]In this section

  [10:41.17]you will hear ONE interview.

  [10:43.30]The interview

[10:44.08]will be divided into TWO parts.

[10:46.48]At the end of each part,

  [10:48.22]five questions will be asked

  [10:50.03]about what was said.

  [10:51.63]Both the interview

  [10:52.63]and the questions

  [10:53.79]will be spoken ONCE ONLY.

  [10:56.22]After each question

  [10:57.54]there will be a ten-second pause.

  [10:59.57]During the pause,

[11:00.95]you should read the four choices

  [11:03.03]of A, B, C and D,

  [11:05.82]and mark the best answer

  [11:07.59]to each question

  [11:08.66]on ANSWER SHEET TWO.

  [11:10.35]You have THIRTY seconds

  [11:11.97]to preview the questions.

  [11:44.05]Now, listen to Part One

  [11:45.54]of the interview.

  [11:47.12]Questions 1 to 5 are based on

  [11:48.93]Part One of the interview.

  [11:51.18]M: This morning on

  [11:52.44]Take It Off Today, staying

  [11:53.99]in shape on the road.

  [11:55.48]Just because you are staying

[11:56.73]in a hotel does not mean

[11:58.14]your exercise routine has to suffer

  [12:00.09]although too often

  [12:01.43]it probably does.

  [12:03.10]Women's Health's contributing

  [12:04.87]editor Lisa Drayer says there

[12:06.96]are many hotel chains catering to

  [12:08.93]your every workout need.

  [12:10.12]Lisa, good morning!

  [12:11.48]Nice to see you.

[12:12.48]W: Good morning, nice to see you.

[12:14.18]M: So this is a big thing

  [12:15.93]for hotels right now.

  [12:16.99]It is a growing trend.

[12:18.32]Why do you think that is?

  [12:19.64]W: Well, you know,

  [12:20.95]consumers have become

  [12:22.09]increasingly health-conscious,

  [12:23.68]so when we travel,

[12:24.93]we are looking for a hotel

  [12:26.40]that not only

  [12:27.41]has a comfortable bed

  [12:29.23]and a nice lobby,

[12:30.21]but also one that will allow us

  [12:31.98]to maintain our fitness routine

[12:33.63]while we are on the road.

  [12:35.40]So because of this trend,

  [12:37.04]Women's Health

[12:37.98]took a look at some of

  [12:39.95]the major hotel chains

  [12:40.88]throughout the country,

  [12:42.13]including Fairmont,

  [12:43.78]Candlewood Suites,

  [12:45.34]Hyatt, Hilton, Marriott and Westin,

  [12:48.49]and what we found was

  [12:49.70]that all these hotel chains

  [12:51.47]had either improved

  [12:52.54]their fitness offerings,

  [12:53.75]or they had implemented

  [12:55.39]brand-new ones.

  [12:56.76]M: and you found

[12:58.00]that a lot of their clients

  [12:59.36]are looking for an outlet

[13:00.62]when they are on the road

  [13:01.63]and don't want their routines

  [13:03.54]to suffer.

  [13:04.13]W: Absolutely not,

  [13:05.27]especially because many of us

[13:06.92]travel a lot of the time.

  [13:08.67]M: Yeah, increasingly.

  [13:10.41]Alright, let's take a look at some

  [13:13.02]of those offerings.

[13:14.09]We are going to begin with Hyatt,

  [13:15.70]and you really like

  [13:16.95]the amenities from Hyatt,

  [13:18.21]so why is that?

  [13:19.07]W: Right. Hyatt is definitely

  [13:20.92]one of the leaders

[13:21.98]in terms of their fitness offerings.

  [13:24.13]They now offer StayFit

  [13:26.07]at Hyatt Gyms,

  [13:27.28]open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

[13:29.94]So basically you can work out

  [13:31.94]any time of day.

  [13:33.54]And they've also recently partnered

  [13:35.69]with Yoga Away,

  [13:37.05]so they actually offer

  [13:38.22]in-room yoga videos.

[13:39.58]In fact, even during their bedtime

  [13:42.08]turndown service,

[13:43.10]they will give the guest a card

  [13:44.97]with specific breathing

  [13:46.21]instructions,

[13:47.09]and they will also guide the guest

  [13:48.76]to a bedtime yoga video.

[13:50.49]So lots of yoga videos are available.

[13:52.82]M: So no chop on the pillow.

  [13:54.87]This is yoga.

  [13:56.20]There is an alternative choice.

  [13:57.47]W: that's right.

[13:58.61]This is your bedtime yoga workout,

  [14:00.70]and it's free of charge.

  [14:02.00]The hotel will also provide

  [14:03.72]yoga mats and balls,

[14:05.39]and a couple of other perks as well.

  [14:08.45]Hyatt will also offer workout

  [14:10.34]apparel delivered to your room

  [14:11.74]in under an hour,

  [14:13.04]available for purchase.

[14:14.42]M: So no excuses for living at home.

[14:16.69]W: that's right. And you know,

  [14:19.01]some guests will even get

  [14:20.65]a wrist-top GPS monitor,

  [14:21.92]so runners can easily navigate

  [14:24.10]back to the hotel,

  [14:25.45]also monitor heart rate, distance

  [14:27.80]and calories burned.

[14:29.30]This is the end of Part One

  [14:31.02]of the interview.

  [14:32.21]Questions 1 to 5 are based on

  [14:34.43]what you have just heard.

[14:36.11]1. What is the main goal

  [14:38.61]behind this interview?

  [14:49.68]2. What is NOT mentioned

  [14:51.81]as a consumers' requirement

  [14:53.42]for a hotel?

  [15:04.44]3. Which hotel takes

  [15:06.68]the leading position

  [15:07.70]in workout offerings?

[15:18.89]4. Which of the following is

  [15:20.94]NOT provided by Hayatt?

  [15:32.81]5. Which of

  [15:34.30]the following statements

  [15:35.55]is INCORRECT in terms of

  [15:37.49]the bedtime turndown service

  [15:39.23]provided by Hayatt?

  [15:50.30]Now, listen to Part Two

  [15:51.97]of the interview.

  [15:53.45]Questions 6 to 10 are based on

  [15:55.82]Part Two of the interview.

[15:58.14]M: OK, we've got a lot to get to,

  [16:00.32]so let's move past Hyatt

[16:02.14]and go on to Westin really quickly.

  [16:04.15]What's Westin doing right now?

  [16:05.83]W: Westin is great.

  [16:07.23]They now offer

  [16:08.05]Westin WORKOUT Rooms,

  [16:09.65]so you could work out

[16:10.80]in the privacy of your own room

  [16:12.71]since there is various equipment.

[16:14.57]You can either get a Reebok cycle

  [16:17.08]or a treadmill,

  [16:18.48]as well as dumbbells

  [16:19.68]and various videos, DVDs,

  [16:21.74]Pilates, yoga and spinning.

[16:24.53]So a great perk with Westin.

  [16:25.94]It is available for

  [16:27.62]an additional charge.

  [16:29.09]So, we are talking

  [16:30.41]about 20 dollars above

  [16:31.33]a market-room rate.

[16:32.69]But it's great for business travelers.

  [16:34.50]So they can fit into

  [16:36.27]their workout routine

  [16:37.36]whenever their schedule permits.

  [16:38.88]M: At Fairmont,

[16:40.26]there is what's called Fairmont Fit.

  [16:42.74]W: Right,

[16:43.76]we love the Fairmont Fit Program

  [16:45.55]because the staff will deliver

  [16:47.22]Adidas workout gear free

  [16:49.04]of charge to your room,

  [16:50.35]everything from T-shirts

  [16:52.04]to shorts to sneakers,

[16:53.56]so if you are one of those travelers

  [16:55.20]who over-pack your suitcase

[16:56.98]and you just don't have room

  [16:58.77]to bring your workout clothes,

[17:00.01]there is no need to worry.

[17:01.98]M: It is very helpful for

  [17:03.63]a lot of travelers

  [17:04.84]who are trying to take

  [17:05.82]only a carryon bag.

  [17:06.95]when they go traveling,
