  [15:26.10]Thank you.

[15:29.49]NOW you have TWO minutes to complete your work.

[17:33.96]This is the end of Section A Talk

  [17:38.22]SECTION B CONVERSATIONS

[17:41.49]In this section you will hear two conversations.

[17:45.08]At the end of each conversation,

[17:47.71]five questions will be asked about what was said.

[17:51.66]Both the conversation and the questions will be spoken ONCE ONLY.

[17:57.37]After each question there will be a ten-second pause.

[18:01.92]During the pause, you should read the four choices of A, B, C and D,

[18:10.10]and mark the best answer to each question on ANSWER SHEET TWO.

[18:15.55]You have thirty seconds to preview the questions.

  [18:50.51]Now, listen to the conversations.

  [18:54.00]Conversation One

[18:56.17]W: Hi, Lewis. It's Jacinta here.

[18:59.71]M: Oh, hi, Jacinta. I was just going to call you.

[19:03.60]I was thinking we ought to do something about accommodation

  [19:05.94]for our trip to Queenstown.

[19:08.41]W: Yeah, actually that's just why I rang you.

[19:12.25]I've been looking on the Internet--

[19:13.81]there was one place that looked OK called Travellers' Lodge,

[19:17.95]but when I checked availability for January

  [19:21.14]when we're planning to go

[19:22.20]I found it was fully booked.

[19:24.93]W: Right. Well, we'd better do something now I suppose.

[19:29.39]M: I've actually got a list up here on the computer--

[19:32.33]there's one place called Bingley's that looks possible.

  [19:36.23]It's 19.75 dollars a night--that's US dollars,

[19:41.37]they quote all the prices in US dollars.

[19:44.64]W: So that's about 26 or 27 New Zealand dollars.

[19:49.36]That's OK. That'll be in a dormitory, is it?

  [19:53.12]M: Yeah--they say 8-bed dorms.

[19:55.81]And the hostel's right in the town centre and they've got a café...

[20:00.07]they have theme nights every weekend, whatever that means...

[20:04.16]W: Oh, you know, like certain sorts of food and music...

[20:07.95]and people might wear special clothes like

[20:10.15]that Egyptian evening we went to last year.

[20:13.31]M: Sounds good. Was there anywhere else?

[20:16.30]W: Yeah, a couple more places.

[20:18.63]There's one called Chalet Lodge which is just 18.00 US dollars,

  [20:23.44]that's for a bed in a 12-bed dorm.

[20:26.62]They do single and family rooms as well.

[20:29.61]It looks as if it's a bit out of town...

[20:32.63]says it's got an alpine setting...

[20:35.59]a "quiet" alpine setting. What do you think?

  [20:39.08]M: Mmm, not sure...

[20:41.20]W: Oh, but actually it's not far out at all...

[20:44.79]it says 10 minutes' walk from town, so...

[20:47.61]Oh, and it says it's "children friendly".

[20:50.77]M: Mmm, I'm not so sure about that.

  [20:54.27]What about the third place?

  [20:56.96]W: Aah. That's called Globetrotters.

[21:00.10]Let's see, they do private rooms,

[21:02.49]or 5-bed dorms for 18.50--it's in the centre,

[21:07.62]just by the lake... and that includes breakfast.

  [21:10.94]M: Didn't the other two?

  [21:13.46]W: I don't think so.

[21:15.38]They didn't mention it, so probably not.

[21:18.57]Oh, and it says something about a free skydive... Wow!

[21:23.77]M: Don't know if I'm all that keen on jumping out of aeroplanes...

[21:28.38]W: Oh, actually what it says is you can win a chance to do a skydive--

[21:33.06]they give one away, every day to one of the guests.

[21:36.48]M: Well, if I win it, you can do it...

  [21:39.49]Anyway, do they have room?

[21:41.76]W: Yeah, I checked the availability.

[21:44.22]Shall I go ahead and book there then?

  [21:46.62]M: Fine.

[21:48.44]This is the end of Conversation One.

[21:50.96]Questions 1-5 are based on Conversation One.

[21:55.03]1. Where does the conversation most probably take place?

[22:11.74]2. What are the two speakers talking about?

[22:26.16]3. What do we learn about Chalet Lodge from the coversation?

[22:41.75]4. Which hostel includes free breakfast?

[22:56.59]5. What do we know about Globetrotters?

  [23:11.28]Conversation Two

[23:13.15]M: Hello, Laura. Glad you could make it.

  [23:15.36]You're the only student

[23:16.12]who put your name down for this literature tutorial

[23:19.15]so let's get started, shall we?

[23:20.87]I want to run over some aspects of the novel,

  [23:23.66]The Secret Garden, with you

  [23:25.22]before the test next week.

[23:27.39]Be sure to take some notes and ask questions if you need to.

  [23:30.97]W: Sure, I will.

[23:33.21]M: Okay, so, the story follows two key characters--

[23:38.00]you should refer to them as protagonists--

[23:41.03]who go by the names of Mary Lennox and Colin Craven.

[23:45.69]The story is set shortly after the turn of the twentieth century,

[23:49.94]and the narrative tracks the development of the protagonists

[23:53.43]as they learn to overcome their own personal troubles together.

  [23:58.27]W: That's quite a common storyline, isn't it?

  [24:01.97]M: Yes, you're right, Laura.

[24:04.14]So, what can you tell me about the character of Mary?

[24:08.17]W: Well, in the beginning she is an angry, rude child

[24:12.54]who is orphaned after a cholera outbreak

  [24:15.14]and forced to leave India

[24:16.83]and move to the United Kingdom to her uncle's house in Yorkshire.

  [24:21.29]M: That's right--and there she meets Colin

[24:23.98]who spends his days in an isolated room,

[24:27.12]believing himself to be permanently crippled

[24:29.64]with no hope of ever gaining the ability to walk.

[24:33.15]The two strike up a friendship and gradually learn,

  [24:36.39]by encouraging each other,

[24:37.90]that they can both become healthy, happy and fulfilled in life.

[24:43.26]W: Will we need to remember a lot of these details for the exam?

  [24:47.76]M: Just the basic outline.

[24:49.88]Examiners don't want to read a plot summary--

[24:53.17]they know what the book is about.

[24:55.09]Focus on narrative techniques instead, such as point of view.

  [24:59.84]W: What does that mean?

[25:02.12]M: It's all about how we see the story.

  [25:05.24]This story, for example,

  [25:06.71]is written from the perspective

[25:08.53]of what is called an "omniscient narrator".

  [25:12.02]Omniscient means all-knowing.

[25:14.39]So, as readers we get to see

[25:16.92]how all the characters feel about things,

[25:19.24]what they like and don't like,

[25:21.06]and what their motivations are in the story.

[25:23.64]W: Won't it be hard to write a technical analysis?

  [25:27.03]After all, it's a kids' book.

[25:29.16]M: Well, it was initially pitched at adults you know,

[25:33.46]but over the years it has become seen as a more youth-orientated work.

  [25:38.47]And you're right in a sense--

[25:40.29]the simple vocabulary makes it ideally suited for children.

[25:44.23]But that doesn't mean there isn't much to analyse.

[25:47.48]Look at the symbolism, for instance.

  [25:49.94]W: Symbols are things, right?

  [25:52.11]Material things--like objects--that stand for abstract ideas.

[25:57.22]M: Absolutely, yes. And the author uses many of them in the novel.

[26:02.81]This is the end of Conversation Two.

[26:05.15]Questions 6-10 are based on Conversation Two.

[26:09.65]6. What is the literature tutorial about?

[26:24.75]7. When is the story of the novel set?

[26:39.18]8. Where do the two protagonists meet?

[26:53.56]9. What does the student need to remember for the exam?

  [27:08.66]10. According to the tutor,

[27:11.82]in what way is The Secret Garden a kid's book?

[27:25.09]This is the end of Part Two Listening Comprehension.
