[11:33.79]When it is over, you will be given TWO minutes to complete your work.

  [11:38.50]Reading Skills and Strategies

  [11:40.98]Good morning, everyone.

[11:43.32]Today we'll talk about reading skills and strategies.

[11:46.38]Reading is a great habit that can truly change our life forever.

[11:50.46]Reading purely for leisure is fun,

[11:53.02]but there exist certain reading skills and strategies,

[11:56.06]which if mastered at an early stage

[11:58.48]can help us be better and comprehensive readers.

[12:01.76]The first reading strategy we're going to talk about is speed-reading.

[12:05.65]The aim of speed-reading is basically to increase the reading speed

[12:09.60]without influencing the understanding of what you're reading.

[12:12.59]Some of the strategies used in speed reading include:

[12:16.19]identifying words without focusing on each letter,

  [12:19.38]not sounding out all words,

[12:21.55]spending less time on some phrases than others,

  [12:24.34]and skimming through small sections.

  [12:26.65]Next strategy is active reading.

[12:30.28]There are times when you just cannot afford to skim through or scan through the text

[12:34.87]but need to get an in-depth understanding of what you're reading

[12:38.87]and hence you need to make sure you're actively involved.

[12:42.60]There are four important points that you need to keep in mind during active reading.

[12:47.42]First, identify the most important parts of the text

  [12:50.86]according to your own understanding

[12:53.25]and highlight or underline them using a pencil or a marker while you are reading.

[12:58.35]You can even use different colors to highlight diverse aspects of the text.

[13:03.45]Second, jot down the headings as you read the detail,

[13:07.74]using one or two keywords for each point.

  [13:11.19]Third, before you start reading,

[13:13.30]write down all the questions you want to answer.

[13:16.03]This helps you to read accordingly

[13:18.27]and ensures that you get the answers to all your questions

[13:22.24]and don't get distracted while reading.

[13:24.25]Fourth, after you've read one complete section of the text,

[13:28.04]summarize that portion in your own words.

[13:31.24]Later, go through the text again

[13:33.41]to check how accurate your summary was

  [13:35.99]and modify or upgrade it

[13:37.83]in case you've left out any details.

[13:40.00]Now, let's take a look at the last strategy, SQ3R,

[13:44.65]which is the abbreviation of five words

[13:46.46]indicating the five steps involved in this strategy.

[13:49.89]They are Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review.

[13:54.59]This method facilitates a very deep understanding

[13:58.12]of the matter that is being read.

[13:59.86]The first step, Survey, includes getting a quick idea

[14:04.78]of what the whole writing piece is about.

  [14:06.95]The second step, Question,

[14:09.14]means to create questions in your mind

[14:11.21]and look for the answers while you are reading the text.

[14:13.95]The third step is to read selectively

[14:17.02]if you are looking for specifics.

[14:19.04]Learn to find out the portions of the text

[14:21.42]that are important to you and move over.

[14:23.74]The fourth step is Recite, which means to

[14:27.07]try and answer the questions raised in the second step

  [14:30.46]in your own words.

[14:31.88]The last step is to review or summarize the entire text in your mind.

[14:36.57]OK, today we've talked about three reading strategies.

[14:40.72]I hope these strategies can enhance your reading process

[14:44.11]and help you get the most out of any book or any text

[14:47.70]that you lay your eyes on.

[14:49.74]NOW you have TWO minutes to complete your work.

[16:55.03]This is the end of Section A talk

  [16:58.77]SECTION B CONVERSATIONS

[17:02.72]In this section you will hear two conversations.

[17:06.01]At the end of each conversation,

[17:08.34]five questions will be asked about what was said.

[17:12.34]Both the conversation and the questions will be spoken ONCE ONLY.

[17:18.13]After each question there will be a ten-second pause.

[17:22.97]During the pause, you should read the four choices of A, B, C and D,

[17:30.50]and mark the best answer to each question on ANSWER SHEET TWO.

[17:35.97]You have thirty seconds to preview the questions.

  [18:11.61]Now, listen to the conversations.

  [18:14.52]Conversation One

  [18:16.28]W: Hi, Mr. Brown.

[18:18.31]How's your apartment working out for you?

  [18:21.52]M: Well, Ms. Nelson.

[18:23.04]That's what I would like to talk to you about.

  [18:25.48]W: Is there any problem?

[18:27.49]M: Well, I want to talk to you about the noise recently!

  [18:32.05]W: Oh...

[18:33.83]M: Within the last week, almost every night,

  [18:36.58]when the clock struck 9,

[18:38.83]some sort of rock-and-roll music just broke out loud.

  [18:42.81]It was really too noisy.

[18:44.59]I couldn't go to sleep even with my earplugs.

[18:48.04]Would you mind talking to the tenant in 4B

[18:51.41]and ask him to keep his music down,

  [18:53.38]especially after 10:00 o'clock at night?

  [18:56.78]W: Oh... Who? Me?

  [18:59.64]M: Yes.

  [19:01.22]W: Why?

[19:02.79]M: The music is blaring almost every night,

[19:05.52]and it should be your job as a manager

[19:07.74]to take care of these things.

  [19:09.86]Wouldn't you agree?

[19:11.33]W: Hey, I just collect the rent.

[19:14.23]Besides, the man living there is the owner's son,

  [19:17.51]and he's a big man.

[19:19.63]M: But that doesn't mean that you shouldn't do anything.

[19:22.75]At least remind him politely of the noise.

[19:26.43]He may be a reasonable man.

[19:28.78]W: Well... Alright, I'll see what I can do.

  [19:32.23]Is there anything else?

[19:34.32]M: Yes. Could you talk to the owners of the property next door

[19:38.21]about the pungent odor drifting this way?

[19:40.97]I couldn't help throwing up every time

[19:43.36]when I smelled it. It was disgusting.

  [19:45.94]Really, really disgusting.

[19:48.37]W: Well, the area is zoned for agricultural and livestock use,

[19:53.26]so there's nothing much I can do about that.

  [19:55.74]I'm very sorry for that.

[19:57.76]Ah, some tenants will use perfume to cover this unpleasant smell.

[20:02.83]Maybe you can try that way as well.

[20:05.56]M: Well, what about that noise?

  [20:09.20]W: What noise? I don't hear anything.

[20:12.54]M: There, there it is again.

  [20:14.43]W: What noise?

  [20:16.25]M: That noise.

[20:17.93]W: Oh, that noise. I guess the military has resumed its exercises

  [20:23.11]on the artillery range.

[20:25.03]M: You have to be kidding. Can't anything be done about it?

[20:29.07]Am I still safe living here?

[20:31.47]It looks as if I lived in some kind of battlefield. Oh my god!

[20:35.72]W: For sure, you're pretty safe here.

  [20:38.13]M: Can we do something?

[20:40.06]W: I've protested that this activity,

[20:42.73]and these weekly activities should cease...

[20:45.57]within the next three to five years.

  [20:48.50]M: What did you say?

  [20:49.73]Weekly activities?

[20:51.44]Do you mean that such noise breaks out regularly every week?

[20:56.04]W: I'll see what I can do. Hopefully we can find a solution.

[21:00.58]M: You never told me about these problems

[21:03.22]before I signed the rental agreement.

[21:05.31]I think I had enough of it. I'm moving out tomorrow!

[21:09.34]W: Sir, if you move out that early,

[21:11.73]I'm afraid you can get back only a quarter of the $500 deposit.

  [21:16.28]You've signed a 1-year commitment...

  [21:19.26]M: Forget about the deposit.

[21:21.13]This is the end of Conversation One.

[21:23.96]Questions 1-5 are based on Conversation One.

[21:28.55]1. What does the man want the women to do with the noisy tenant?

[21:44.34]2. Why is the woman hesitant about talking to the noisy tenant?

[22:00.09]3. How does the woman respond to the man's second complaint?

[22:15.65]4. What is the source of the man's third complaint?

[22:30.90]5. What do we learn about the rental agreement?

  [22:45.32]Conversation Two

[22:47.39]W: Dad. Are you going to miss me when I leave for college next week?

[22:52.10]I mean you're always talking about

[22:53.88]how much money you'll save on food, hot water, and gas while I am gone.

[22:58.84]M: Of course I'll miss you.

[23:00.85]Honestly, I'll miss and worry about you,

[23:03.23]and you've really tried to prepare yourself.

[23:05.76]You know, I'm proud of you for that.

[23:08.90]You know, getting a university degree is a real accomplishment.

  [23:12.99]W: Exactly.

[23:15.01]M: But, let's go over the to-do list.

  [23:17.70]Do you have everything ready?

[23:19.46]I mean, did you pay your tuition and housing fees by the deadline?

[23:23.40]Because, you know, if you don't, you'll lose your class schedule,

[23:27.08]and you have to register all over again.

[23:29.82]W: Yeah, I paid for that a few days ago.

[23:32.76]M: Okay, did you sign up for the meal plan at the university

[23:36.67]so you don't have to eat instant noodles every day?

[23:40.21]W: Yep. But Mom said I could take some food from home

  [23:44.22]to get me started.

[23:46.18]M: Well, the oatmeal is in the pantry,

[23:48.15]and just take what you want.

[23:50.03]And you know you should set up an appointment

[23:52.36]to meet with your academic advisor

[23:54.48]to help you select future classes, right?

[23:56.95]You know, business administration will be a great major for you.

  [24:01.45]W: Well, Dad, uh...

  [24:03.52]M: And future possibilities...

[24:05.34]a great salary, opportunities to make a difference in the community,

  [24:09.03]and supporting...

[24:10.51]W: Well, Dad, uh... I changed my major.

[24:13.98]M: What? You changed you major...

  [24:15.66]you switched majors!?

[24:17.54]W: Yeah. I really thought about it.

[24:20.20]After talking it over with Mom,

[24:22.12]I've decided to major in wildlife science.

[24:25.10]M: What are you talking about?

[24:27.74]W: Yeah. I want a degree in wildlife science.

  [24:31.02]You know, analyzing, maintaining,

[24:33.24]and conserving national forests and wildlife.

[24:36.64]M: Are you serious? Have you made a full consideration?

  [24:40.54]W: Dad, I've always been interested in working with nature;

[24:44.67]and this field will give me the opportunity to live out my dream.

[24:48.20]I've also looked through the online university catalogue,

[24:51.75]and I actually qualify for a two-year, full tuition scholarship.

[24:56.59]M: Wait. When did this all happen?

[24:59.20]W: I can even go on to graduate school

  [25:01.73]and further my education...

[25:03.29]after Todd and I get married, of course.

[25:05.54]M: Graduate school... Todd? Wait, wait, wait!!

  [25:09.74]Who's Todd? Ah, what's next?

[25:13.26]W: Thanks for the credit card.

[25:15.59]Mom said it was a present.

[25:16.97]And I just tried it out to make sure it worked,

[25:19.79]and I had no problem buying my new laptop computer.

  [25:22.94]M: Oh, I'm doomed!

[25:25.66]W: Uh, Dad, where are you going?

[25:28.44]M: Uh, I've decided to enroll in night school to get another degree.

[25:33.90]That's the only way I'm going to pay for your college.

[25:36.87]This is the end of Conversation Two.

[25:39.85]Questions 6-10 are based on Conversation Two.

[25:43.84]6. Why is the woman uncertain if her dad will miss her?

[26:00.07]7. What if the woman doesn't pay the tuition on time?

[26:14.81]8. What is the job of an academic advisor?

[26:28.97]9. What is wildlife science about?

[26:43.14]10. Who is Todd according to the conversation?

[26:57.91]This is the end of Part Two Listening Comprehension.
