　　十九世纪的精神生活比以往任何时代的精神生活都有复杂。这是由于以下几种原因。第一，有关的地区比以往大了;美国和俄国作出重大贡献，欧洲比以前更注意到了古代和近代的印度哲学。第二，十七世纪以来，一向是新事物主要源泉的科学取得了新的胜利，特别是地质学、生物学和有机化学方面。第三，机器生产深深地改变了社会结构，使人类对自己在关于自然环境方面的能力，有了一种新概念。第四，针对思想、政治和经济中的传统体系，在哲学上和政治上出现了深沉的反抗，引起了对向来看成是颠扑不破的许多信念和制度的攻击。这种反抗有两个迥然不同的形式，一个是浪漫主义的，一个是理性主义的。
