  [00:01.56]SECTION B CONVERSATIONS

[00:04.86]In this section you will hear two conversations.

[00:08.88]At the end of each conversation,

[00:11.22]five questions will be asked about what was said.

[00:15.38]Both the conversation and the questions will be spoken once only.

[00:21.37]After each question there will be a ten-second pause.

[00:26.04]During the pause, you should read the four choices of A, B, C and D,

[00:33.46]and mark the best answer to each question on Answer Sheet Two.

[00:39.51]You have 30 seconds to preview the questions.

  [01:13.12]Now, listen to the conversations.

  [01:16.43]CONVERSATION ONE

[01:18.72]Questions 1 to 5 are based on Conversation One.

[01:23.14]W: Department of art design and media, can I help you?

[01:26.94]M: Yes. I'd like some information about photography courses.

[01:31.64]W: Let me just get the prospectus.

[01:34.41]OK, well, we do have several different courses.

[01:38.33]I'll just run through them for you.

  [01:40.80]The first is "Introducing Photography".

[01:44.05]That runs for ten weeks and it's a foundation level course,

[01:48.44]so it's for people just beginning in photography.

  [01:52.17]M: Right.

  [01:53.34]W: That's on Monday evenings, from 6:30 to 9:30.

[01:57.96]Next, there's "Black and White Photography",

  [02:01.18]which is at intermediate level,

[02:03.48]so you would need some previous experience for that one.

[02:07.21]And you also have to have an interview with a tutor beforehand.

[02:11.88]M: Sounds interesting. Which evening is it on?

  [02:15.29]W: It's a daytime course, actually.

[02:18.04]From 2:00 to 4:30 on Tuesdays. That's also for ten weeks.

  [02:24.00]M: That's a pity, I work on Tuesday afternoons.

  [02:28.07]W: There's also Landscape Photography,

[02:30.56]which is on Tuesday evenings, from 6:30 to 9:00.

[02:35.64]That's a longer course than the others, it runs for sixteen weeks.

[02:40.70]M: And do you need previous experience for that one?

[02:44.21]W: Let me just check…Mm, it's advanced level.

  [02:49.35]So yes, you would,

[02:50.98]and again you'd have to be interviewed beforehand. OK?

[02:55.95]Then the only other one we do is the art of "Digital Photography".

[03:01.31]M: I am not sure that's for me, but which evening is it?

  [03:05.23]W: It's a flexitime course.

  [03:07.64]It's on Wednesday,

[03:09.26]but you can do it at any time to suit you during the daytime.

[03:13.77]M: How many weeks is that?

[03:15.49]W: It's up to you, really.

[03:17.25]You have to do 60 hours in all.

  [03:19.88]And again, there's an interview.

  [03:22.53]M: Right. OK.

[03:24.40]Can I just go back to the first course you mentioned?

[03:27.36]Um, what sort of things does that cover?

  [03:30.88]W: "Introducing Photography"?

[03:33.25]Let's see what it says in the prospectus.

  [03:36.36]Yes, here it is:

[03:38.29]Find out about different types of camera and camera care,

[03:42.74]learn how the camera's controls operate,

[03:45.55]and which lens to use for different subjects,

[03:48.88]study the main elements of effective composition.

  [03:52.42]That's all it says.

[03:54.06]You could always talk to the tutor if you wanted more information.

[03:58.53]M: It sounds a bit… basic, to be honest.

[04:02.14]What about "Landscape Photography", was that the next one?

[04:06.45]W: Yes, that includes a field trip,

[04:08.81]where you go out with your tutor on location.

[04:11.90]But, OK, to save me reading everything out,

  [04:15.16]why don't I send you the prospectus?

[04:18.18]M: That'd be great. Could you give me an idea of the fees?

  [04:22.23]W: I'll just have to check…

  [04:25.16]Right, "Introducing Photography", that's 95 pounds.

  [04:30.16]"Black and white"'s the same, I think… No, I tell a lie.

  [04:34.28]It's a bit less… actually 85 pounds.

[04:37.90]And then "Landscape" and "Digital", they are both 140 pounds.

[04:43.20]M: I see. Thanks for your help.

[04:46.57]Questions 1 to 5 are based on Conversation One.

[04:51.17]1. What is the conversation mainly about?

[05:05.82]2. When is "Black and White Photography" on?

[05:20.54]3. What course is the longest one?

[05:34.73]4. What does the woman say about the art of "Digital Photography"?

[05:50.62]5. What do we learn from the conversation

  [05:55.03]about "Landscape Photography"?

[06:07.30]This is the end of Conversation One.

  [06:10.80]CONVERSATION TWO

[06:12.91]Questions 6 to 10 are based on Conversation Two.

  [06:17.62]W: Come in!

[06:19.23]M: Hi, Professor Jane! Do you have a minute?

  [06:22.53]W: Fredrick! Come in.

[06:25.04]M: I like your new office!

[06:26.79]W: Thanks! It's much nicer than my old one… What can I do for you?

[06:32.20]M: Well… er… I'd like to talk about my English.

  [06:36.46]W: Your English is great!

[06:38.48]You were my top student last semester.

[06:41.43]How's your new speaking class with Professor Simmons?

  [06:45.00]M: He's a good teacher, alright… but,

  [06:47.31]I'm worried about my classmates.

  [06:49.52]W: Your classmates?

[06:51.83]M: I mean… my classmates are from all different countries.

[06:55.83]I'm afraid that if I talk with them during group work,

  [06:59.14]I'll pick up their accents.

[07:01.54]W: I wouldn't worry about that if I were you.

[07:04.41]There's no way you can pick up a different accent

[07:07.42]just from being in class a few hours a week.

  [07:10.67]M: Really?

  [07:11.98]W: Really!

[07:13.44]Just think of all the English

[07:15.24]you're exposed to every day here in the United States.

[07:19.20]You listen to the radio, you watch TV,

[07:22.46]you talk with your American friends,

[07:24.61]you chat with people in stores…

[07:27.22]Most of the English you hear is American English.

[07:31.03]You're only with your classmates a couple of hours a day.

[07:34.90]That's not going to affect your accent.

  [07:38.31]M: Are you sure?

[07:39.72]W: Let me give you an example… Umm…

[07:43.12]say you have a mother from Germany living in the United States.

[07:47.63]Let's say she has a child here.

[07:50.24]Even if the mother speaks English with a German accent,

[07:54.45]her child will still grow up speaking American English.

[07:58.58]Why? Because the child's getting language from lots of other places,

  [08:04.20]not just the mother.

[08:06.10]It's the same for your situation.

[08:08.96]M: I understand your example about the child…

[08:11.82]but I think children learn language differently than adults.

  [08:15.92]W: Actually you're right.

  [08:17.78]It isn't exactly the same

[08:20.04]because children CAN actually learn accents.

[08:23.71]Their minds and bodies are much more flexible than ours,

  [08:27.72]so it's easier for them.

[08:29.92]For adults who are studying a foreign language,

[08:32.83]accent is one of the hardest things to improve.

[08:36.29]In fact, most adults never lose their native accents.

[08:41.33]M: So does that mean I'll never sound like a native speaker?

  [08:45.64]W: Unfortunately that's probably true.

[08:49.19]M: Hmmm… that makes me wonder

[08:51.66]if I should take that pronunciation class

[08:54.22]that I signed up for next semester.

[08:56.98]W: I wouldn't look at it that way.

[08:59.68]In a pronunciation class, there are still important things

  [09:02.99]that you can learn.

  [09:04.95]M: Like what, for example?

[09:07.00]W: Like things that will make your speech clearer---

[09:10.02]things such as stress, rhythm, and intonation.

[09:14.29]M: I guess you're right… Thanks for your advice, professor.

[09:17.74]I'll think over what you said.

[09:20.69]Questions 6 to 10 are based on Conversation Two.

[09:25.66]6. Where does this conversation take place?

[09:40.44]7. Why wouldn't the woman worry about the man's situation?

  [09:56.11]8. According to the woman,

[09:59.63]why is it easier for children to learn accents?

[10:13.07]9. What does the woman say about adults learning a foreign language?

[10:29.20]10. What does the man decide to do at the end of the conversation?

[10:45.59]This is the end of Conversation Two.
