[00:01.56]SECTION B CONVERSATIONS

[00:04.86]In this section you will hear two conversations.

[00:08.88]At the end of each conversation,

[00:11.22]five questions will be asked about what was said.

[00:15.38]Both the conversation and the questions will be spoken once only.

[00:21.37]After each question there will be a ten-second pause.

[00:26.04]During the pause, you should read the four choices of A, B, C and D,

[00:33.46]and mark the best answer to each question on Answer Sheet Two.

[00:39.51]You have 30 seconds to preview the questions.

[01:13.12]Now, listen to the conversations.

[01:16.82]CONVERSATION ONE

[01:18.89]Questions 1 to 5 are based on Conversation One.

[01:23.11]M: Nice to have you here, Karen.

[01:25.13]Could you tell us how you became interested in ballet?

[01:28.15]W: Well, I actually saw Celia Franka dance,

[01:32.89]and now she founded the National Ballet of Canada.

[01:36.41]And she was dancing in my hometown---Giselle, Canada,

[01:40.64]and I was taken for my birthday, and I saw her dance,

[01:44.50]I fell in love with it,

[01:46.10]and I started taking lessons of it when I was around ten.

[01:50.31]M: Now you were married fairly recently, weren't you?

[01:53.86]W: It'll be three years next month, yes.

[01:57.54]M: Is touring and so forth hard on married life?

[02:01.15]I believe your husband's an actor, isn't he?

[02:04.32]W: Yes, he is.

[02:06.08]M: So you're probably both away quite a lot.

[02:09.34]W: We've been very fortunate.

[02:11.58]We've managed to stay together most of the time.

[02:15.35]The longest we were separated was

[02:17.80]when I was on tour with the National Ballet in Europe last spring,

[02:22.61]and I was gone for six weeks,

[02:24.87]and he was making a television series

[02:27.33]and he was in Australia for six weeks.

[02:30.49]So we have been separated a few times,

[02:33.31]but most of the time we manage to be together.

[02:36.57]We've just been very fortunate.

[02:39.48]M: Throughout the year...

[02:40.73]how much time do you have off away from the dance?

[02:44.45]W: Very little.

[02:45.80]I'm trying to make sure that I get one week in June this year,

[02:49.97]because I have not had more than two days free since a year ago.

[02:54.39]So I've been working very hard,

[02:57.00]and I feel that I really need one week free, you know.

[03:01.31]M: How long can a ballerina go on

[03:03.61]before she should start thinking of retiring?

[03:06.28]W: I hope that I have another ten years at most to dance.

[03:10.69]M: What would you do after that?

[03:12.90]Would you leave the ballet completely

[03:14.95]or go into teaching, or choreography?

[03:17.63]W: I don't think choreography,

[03:19.88]I don't think I have any talent in... you know...

[03:23.94]I have no desire, no talent.

[03:26.24]I like to teach, I like to coach young dancers.

[03:30.00]I don't think I would leave the ballet world entirely,

[03:33.71]but I may try something else.

[03:35.72]You never know.

[03:37.19]I'm interested in other things

[03:39.19]and I have done some sorts of musical comedy work,

[03:43.00]and I've enjoyed it very much---

[03:45.11]just to expand myself a little and to look around.

[03:48.82]And this Christmas again

[03:50.98]I'll be playing Cinderella in an English pantomime---

[03:54.49]which is great fun for me.

[03:56.70]I really have fun and it's not serious dancing, you know,

[04:01.06]and I get to speak and act and everything.

[04:04.61]So I don't know.

[04:06.22]I would also like to have a family,

[04:08.59]so I have a lot of things that I may do.

[04:13.00]Questions 1 to 5 are based on Conversation One.

[04:17.60]1. Where's Karen from?

[04:30.60]2. When did Karen start taking ballet lessons?

[04:45.26]3. What can we learn from the conversation

[04:49.42]about Karen's married life?

[05:01.32]4. How many days has the woman been off away

[05:05.79]from the dance since last year?

[05:17.77]5. What would Karen probably do after retiring?

[05:32.62]This is the end of Conversation One.

[05:36.23]CONVERSATION TWO

[05:38.63]Questions 6 to 10 are based on Conversation Two.

[05:43.15]W: Dade County,

[05:43.77]Florida is a dangerous place to be these days,

[05:47.34]according to a Miami Herald poll released this week.

[05:51.40]The survey reports

[05:53.30]that 42% of people interviewed or their family members

[05:58.42]have been victims of burglary, robbery or assault in the past 5 years.

[06:04.38]Almost one half say they need guns to feel safe in Dade County.

[06:09.84]The Herald conducted the survey

[06:11.87]in the wake of a widely publicized booby trap killing,

[06:15.93]in which a store owner killed a would-be burglar.

[06:19.44]Herald reporter Andre Vicluchee has been covering the story.

[06:24.75]M: The one part that I think was a little surprising

[06:27.28]was the number of people who feel that it is okay to shoot,

[06:30.59]to kill an intruder that comes into your house.

[06:34.09]We found 63% feel that they should have the right

[06:38.56]to kill an intruder in their house.

[06:41.02]W: Whether or not the person is armed or not only if...

[06:45.77]M: Whether they know or not if the person is armed.

[06:48.88]It surprised us;

[06:50.33]we figured there would be something of a hard-line attitude out there.

[06:54.30]But this was probably above what we expected.

[06:58.01]W: Well, it seems, though,

[06:59.75]that people are perceiving at least in Dade County

[07:03.51]that crimes are really in a bad situation

[07:06.97]that they are willing to do something about it with violence.

[07:10.48]M: Yes. I went back and questioned

[07:13.71]more at length another 15 or 20 respondents from the poll.

[07:18.22]And they all seem to feel that,

[07:20.22]if they find themselves in a situation

[07:22.52]in which they have to take some action,

[07:24.92]even if it means killing somebody, they'll do it.

[07:28.20]W: I'll take it that Miami Herald poll

[07:31.98]and perhaps that a lot of people's feelings about crimes

[07:36.04]stem in part from this case of the booby trap victim,

[07:40.39]a store owner booby trapped his variety store raider

[07:43.99]in a black neighborhood.

[07:45.81]Tell us about that case.

[07:48.16]M: The man's name is Prentice Raschid.

[07:50.64]He is a black business man

[07:52.95]who has a small store in a black high-crime area of town.

[07:57.45]He has been burglarized,

[07:59.21]I think, 7 or 8 times over the past few weeks,

[08:03.28]had asked for help from the police

[08:05.66]and had not gotten any answer to his satisfaction.

[08:08.90]So he went ahead and set up an electric booby trap in the store.

[08:14.23]About a week and a half ago one morning,

[08:17.07]they found a young man dead in the booby trap

[08:20.58]who had been electrocuted

[08:22.38]while trying to carry out some stuff from the store.

[08:25.33]W: And what has the public reaction been then?

[08:29.04]M: The public reaction

[08:30.45]has been an overwhelming support for Mr. Raschid.

[08:34.21]He has been charged with manslaughter,

[08:36.51]and with setting up an illegal man trap.

[08:40.35]Questions 6 to 10 are based on Conversation Two.

[08:45.01]6. What can we learn from the conversation about the Herald survey?

[09:00.95]7. What surprised the man?

[09:14.07]8. According to the woman,

[09:17.57]where do people's feelings about crimes partly come from?

[09:31.24]9. Why was the electric booby trap set up?

[09:45.95]10. What can we learn from the conversation about Prentice Raschid?

[10:01.91]This is the end of Conversation Two.
