  [00:01.56]SECTION B CONVERSATIONS

[00:04.86]In this section you will hear two conversations.

[00:08.88]At the end of each conversation,

[00:11.22]five questions will be asked about what was said.

[00:15.38]Both the conversation and the questions will be spoken once only.

[00:21.37]After each question there will be a ten-second pause.

[00:26.04]During the pause, you should read the four choices of A, B, C and D,

[00:33.46]and mark the best answer to each question on Answer Sheet Two.

[00:39.51]You have 30 seconds to preview the questions.

  [01:13.12]Now, listen to the conversations.

  [01:16.61]CONVERSATION ONE

[01:18.84]Questions 1 to 5 are based on Conversation One.

  [01:22.86]W: Hello, David.

[01:24.52]M: Oh, Hi, sorry, Mia. I'm a bit late.

  [01:28.29]W: Oh! No problem.

[01:30.55]Thanks for agreeing to help me with my assignment today.

[01:34.48]M: Sure. You are going to talk about European rock art, aren't you?

[01:39.30]W: Yes, the rock drawings in the caves of Lascaux in western France.

[01:44.98]M: Oh, fantastic, over 13,000 years old,

[01:48.93]I believe. What sort of drawings are they?

[01:51.99]W: They're drawings of animals on the whole,

[01:55.09]but you can also find some human representations.

[01:58.81]There are roughly 600 drawings at Lascaux.

[02:02.62]M: Really? Were they mostly pictures of bulls?

  [02:06.53]W: Well, no, actually.

[02:08.93]The animal most depicted was the horse.

[02:12.29]Have a look at this graph.

[02:14.14]It shows the distribution of different animals.

  [02:17.60]You see… first the horse,

[02:19.81]and then after that a sort of prehistoric bull.

[02:23.46]And the third most commonly drawn creature was the stag.

[02:27.92]M: What are the drawings like?

[02:29.92]W: Well, the bulls are depicted very figuratively---

  [02:32.93]they're very realistic.

[02:35.23]They are very big comparing to other drawings, of people.

[02:39.39]They appear to be almost three-dimensional in some cases.

  [02:43.44]M: Amazing.

[02:45.04]Perhaps they felt these animals were the most impressive

[02:48.45]and needed to be represented like that.

  [02:51.01]W: Yeah, maybe.

[02:52.83]The drawings of the humans by contrast consist of just simple lines,

[02:57.86]like the stick figures my little sister draws.

[03:01.06]Perhaps humans were seen as less important.

[03:03.89]M: So apart from the bulls and horses and stags,

[03:07.83]were there any other creatures depicted?

[03:10.64]W: In one or two chambers,

[03:12.64]you do find pictures of fish but they're quite rare.

[03:16.40]M: What sort of size is the cave?

[03:18.57]It must be quite large to have that many pictures.

[03:22.17]W: Well, it's actually a number of inter-linking chambers, really.

[03:26.38]The first 20 metres inside the cave

[03:29.78]slope down very steeply to the first hall in the network.

[03:33.94]That's called the Great Hall of the Bulls.

[03:37.04]Then off to the left we have the Painted Gallery,

[03:40.45]which is about 30 metres long.

  [03:42.77]Then further into the cave

[03:44.88]we find a second, lower gallery called the Lateral Passage.

[03:49.74]This opens off the aisle to the right of the Great Hall of the Bulls.

[03:54.34]M: Is the cave open to the public today?

  [03:57.14]W: Well, no.

[03:58.90]After the initial discovery in 1940, it was opened

[04:02.77]and literally millions of people came through to see the drawings.

  [04:06.83]Then in the fifties

[04:08.78]the experts started to worry about the damage

  [04:11.59]being done to the drawings,

[04:13.24]and the government finally closed the Lascaux cave in 1963.

[04:19.36]Questions 1 to 5 are based on Conversation One.

[04:23.86]1. What is the woman going to talk about?

[04:37.43]2. What can we learn from the conversation about the drawings?

[04:52.76]3. What might be seen as less important according to the woman?

[05:07.95]4. What can we learn from the conversation

[05:11.95]about the chambers in the cave?

[05:24.06]5. When was the cave open to the public?

[05:37.93]This is the end of Conversation One.

  [05:41.59]CONVERSATION TWO

[05:43.89]Questions 6 to 10 are based on Conversation Two.

  [05:48.09]M: Excuse me madam.

  [05:49.79]W: Yes?

  [05:51.28]M: I wonder whether you'd help us.

[05:53.13]We're doing a survey on smokers' habits.

[05:56.49]W: Well... I'm in a bit of a hurry actually.

  [06:00.05]M: It'll only take a few minutes.

[06:02.10]We'd very much appreciate your help.

[06:04.81]W: Well, all right. I can spare that, I suppose.

[06:08.11]M: Thank you. Are you a smoker?

  [06:10.82]W: Yes, I'm afraid I am.

  [06:12.62]My husband is, too.

[06:14.34]As you can see... I've just bought this week's ration.

[06:18.89]M: Would you describe yourself as being a heavy smoker?

  [06:22.55]W: Heavy... no.

[06:24.27]I wouldn't call three packets of twenty a week heavy smoking.

  [06:28.68]No... a light smoker.

  [06:30.58]My husband... he's different...

  [06:32.89]M: Yes?

[06:34.04]W: I get in twice as many a week for him.

  [06:37.24]M: You wouldn't describe him as a chain-smoker...?

[06:40.51]W: No... he's not as bad as that.

  [06:43.27]M: Right... Thank you, Mrs....?

  [06:45.67]W: Bradley. Doris Bradley.

  [06:48.23]M: ... Mrs. Bradley.

[06:49.59]You and your husband smoke cigarettes I see.

[06:52.20]What about cigars... a pipe... Does your husband...?

  [06:56.15]W: Oh he's never smoked a pipe.

  [06:58.35]He's the restless, nervy type.

  [07:00.85]I always associate pipe-smoking

[07:02.87]with people of another kind... the calm contented type...

[07:07.52]M: Right. Now let's keep to you, Mrs. Bradley.

[07:10.57]When did you begin to smoke?

  [07:12.83]W: I'm thirty-two now...

[07:15.38]so I must have been seventeen when I had my first cigarette.

  [07:19.99]M: I see. Now...

[07:22.19]Might I ask if you have ever tried to give up smoking?

  [07:26.42]W: Yes, twice.

[07:28.14]The first time about six months before getting married.

[07:32.09]Oh that was because I was saving up and... yes...

[07:35.55]I used to smoke more in those days.

  [07:38.01]Sometimes thirty a day.

[07:40.32]So I decided to give it up---

[07:42.47]but only succeeded I'm afraid in cutting it down.

  [07:46.02]M: And the second time?

[07:47.88]W: Oh the second time I did manage to give up completely for a while.

[07:52.53]The doctor advised me not to smoke at all.

[07:55.44]I went for about seven or eight months without a single cigarette.

[08:00.04]M: Then you took it up again.

[08:02.09]W: Yes... a couple of weeks after the baby was born.

[08:06.10]It was all right then because the baby was being bottle-fed anyway.

[08:10.90]M: Now, Mrs. Bradley. When do you smoke most?

[08:14.96]W: Erm, when I'm sitting watching TV or reading a book,

[08:19.52]but especially when I'm in company.

[08:22.07]I never smoke when I'm doing the housework.

[08:25.07]M: Do you ever smoke at meal times?

[08:27.72]W: I always have one cigarette after a meal.

  [08:31.13]Never on an empty stomach.

[08:33.59]Which reminds me---I must be going.

[08:36.39]My husband will be waiting for his lunch.

  [08:39.24]And Keith ... he's my son.

[08:41.70]M: OK, thank you, Mrs. Bradley.

  [08:44.60]W: You are welcome.

[08:46.70]Questions 6 to 10 are based on Conversation Two.

[08:51.06]6. How many cigarettes does the woman smoke every week?

[09:05.98]7. What kind of people does the woman think might smoke pipes?

[09:21.32]8. When did the woman try to give up smoking for the first time?

[09:36.66]9. Why did the woman try to give up smoking for the second time?

[09:52.10]10. What can we learn from the conversation about the woman?

[10:06.90]This is the end of Conversation Two.
