　　[00:11.22]five questions will be asked about what was said.

　　[00:15.38]Both the conversation and the questions will be spoken once only.

　　[00:21.37]After each question there will be a ten-second pause.

　　[00:26.04]During the pause, you should read the four choices of A, B, C and D,

　　[00:33.46]and mark the best answer to each question on Answer Sheet Two.

　　[01:23.07]M: Good morning, Dr Healy. Welcome to "The years to Come".

　　[01:28.19]W: Thank you.

　　[01:29.85]M: Well, what are your predictions about the world?

　　[01:33.41]What is it going to be like in the year 2020?

　　[01:36.97]W: Hum, if present trends continue,

　　[01:40.63]I'm afraid the world in 2020

　　[01:45.56]than the world we live in now.

　　[01:48.16]M: Yes, however, food production is constantly increasing.

　　[01:59.69]Even though production is constantly increasing,

　　[02:03.34]the people of the world will be poorer than they are today.

　　[02:10.71]the supply of food and other necessities of life will not be any better.

　　[02:16.36]And for many they will be worse,

　　[02:19.12]unless the nations of the world

　　[02:24.57]M: What is your estimate of world population in the year 2020?

　　[02:29.29]W: Well, already, world population is about 6,500 million.

　　[02:35.35]If present trends continue,

　　[02:37.70]that is with the number of births by far

　　[02:40.45]exceeding the number of deaths,

　　[02:42.45]the world population could approach 7,500 million in 2020.

　　[02:48.63]M: That's worrying! And what about water?

　　[02:52.24]W: Water is becoming a problem too.

　　[02:55.35]Water shortage will become more severe in the future,

　　[02:58.92]and due to the increase of births

　　[03:01.27]there will be enough water only for half of the population.

　　[03:05.49]M: Which of the present trends

　　[03:07.19]do you think will continue over the next decade?

　　[03:10.19]W: Well, significant loss of the world's forests

　　[03:13.45]will continue over the next ten years

　　[03:16.40]as the demand for wood for fuel and manufacturers increases.

　　[03:21.51]Also atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide and other chemicals

　　[03:27.22]is expected to increase at rates

　　[03:29.63]that could alter the world's climate due to the "greenhouse effect".

　　[03:34.33]M: The "greenhouse effect"?

　　[03:36.19]Could you explain what the "greenhouse effect" is?

　　[03:39.99]W: Sure. Well,

　　[03:41.69]the amount of carbon dioxide in the air

　　[03:44.46]is progressively increasing

　　[03:46.61]and it traps more of the heat of the sun in the atmosphere.

　　[03:50.48]This has a warming effect which could change the climate.

　　[03:54.54]M: I see. Is this the only effect of carbon dioxide?

　　[03:59.79]W: No, it isn't.

　　[04:01.55]Carbon dioxide and other chemicals

　　[04:03.95]which derive from the use of fossil fuels

　　[04:06.75]will also increase the quantity of acid rain

　　[04:10.46]which is already damaging or even destroying plants,

　　[04:14.29]trees and other parts of our environment.

　　[04:17.54]Also, there will be a dramatic increase

　　[06:13.82]M: Good morning, Carol.

　　[06:15.68]W: Now, Graham,

　　[06:16.78]I understand that there has been a lot of

　　[06:19.00]community consultation for the new plan.

　　[06:22.65]M: Yes, we've tried to address some of the concerns

　　[06:25.75]that local groups told us about.

　　[06:28.51]People we've heard from are mainly worried about traffic in the area,

　　[06:32.62]and in particular, the increasing speed of cars near schools.

　　[06:37.12]They feel that it is only a matter of time

　　[06:40.88]before there is an accident as a lot of the children walk to the school.

　　[06:45.59]So we're trying to do something about that.

　　[06:48.54]Another area of concern is the overhead power lines.

　　[06:52.85]These are very old and a lot of people we spoke to

　　[06:56.87]asked if something could be done about them.

　　[06:59.52]Well, I'm happy to report that the power company

　　[07:03.13]has agreed to move the power line underground

　　[07:06.64]at a cost of $800,000.

　　[07:09.99]I think that will really improve the look of the area,

　　[07:13.55]as well as being safer.

　　[07:15.71]W: That's good to know,

　　[07:17.31]but will that mean an increase in rates

　　[07:20.01]for the local businesses in that area?

　　[07:23.06]M: Well, the power company

　　[07:24.84]has agreed to bear the cost of this themselves

　　[07:28.15]after a lot of discussion with the council.

　　[07:31.11]This is wonderful news

　　[07:33.52]as the council now has some extra funds

　　[07:36.12]for us to put into other things like tree planting and art work.

　　[07:41.03]W: That's good news.

　　[07:43.19]M: Now, we've also put together a map

　　[07:45.52]which we've sent out to all the residents in the area.

　　[07:48.68]And on the map we've marked the proposed changes.

　　[07:52.22]Firstly, we'll plant mature pine trees to provide shelter and shade.

　　[07:57.49]In order to address the traffic problems,

　　[08:00.29]the pavements on the corner of Carberry and Thomas Street

　　[08:03.65]will be widened.

　　[08:05.05]This will help to reduce the speed of vehicles entering Thomas Street.

　　[08:09.66]We think it's very important

　　[08:11.67]to separate the local residential streets from the main road.

　　[08:15.67]So the roadway at the entry to Thomas Street from Carberry

　　[08:19.29]will be painted red.

　　[08:21.55]This should mark it more clearly

　　[08:23.70]and act as a signal for traffic to slow down.

　　[08:27.11]W: What do you do to make sure that pedestrians are safe?

　　[08:31.41]M: One way of making sure that the pedestrians are safe

　　[08:34.96]is to increase signage at the intersections.

　　[08:38.12]A "keep clear" sign will be erected at all the junctions,

　　[08:42.38]to enable traffic to exit at all times.

　　[08:45.58]W: I heard that there is something for children too, isn't there?

　　[08:49.79]M: Yes, we're going to get school children in the area

　　[08:53.39]to research a local story,

　　[08:55.75]the life of a local sports hero perhaps,

　　[08:58.86]and an artist will incorporate that story

　　[09:01.51]into paintings on the wall of buildings.

　　[09:04.46]And finally, we've agreed to build a new children's playground.
