  [00:23.89]INTERVIEW 10

  [00:25.22]In this section

  [00:26.69]you will hear ONE interview.

  [00:28.74]The interview

[00:29.50]will be divided into TWO parts.

[00:31.90]At the end of each part,

  [00:33.66]five questions will be asked

  [00:35.32]about what was said.

  [00:36.86]Both the interview

  [00:38.05]and the questions

  [00:39.20]will be spoken ONCE ONLY.

  [00:41.39]After each question

  [00:43.11]there will be a ten-second pause.

  [00:45.03]During the pause,

[00:46.54]you should read the four choices

  [00:48.59]of A, B, C and D,

  [00:51.43]and mark the best answer

  [00:52.99]to each question

  [00:53.91]on ANSWER SHEET TWO.

  [00:56.05]You have THIRTY seconds

  [00:57.45]to preview the questions.

  [01:29.40]Now, listen to Part One

  [01:30.93]of the interview.

  [01:32.60]Questions 1 to 5 are based on

  [01:34.56]Part One of the interview.

  [01:36.66]M: You've spent your life

  [01:38.29]building your nest egg,

  [01:40.02]and protecting your assets

  [01:41.80]and then it happens.

  [01:43.74]You fall in love.

  [01:45.65]But is marriage

[01:46.69]a good financial move for you?

  [01:48.77]On today's money,

  [01:49.87]marriage and your finances,

  [01:52.30]Money in Today's Financial's

  [01:54.18]editor Jean Chatzky

  [01:56.04]will give us some advice.

  [01:57.81]Jean, hey!

  [01:59.31]W: Hey!

[02:00.25]M: So marriage is a beautiful thing.

[02:02.52]But look at it from sort of like

  [02:04.68]a cold hard financial perspective,

[02:07.49]is it a smart thing to get married?

[02:10.28]W: It rolls a lot of people's assets

  [02:12.48]into a risky position.

  [02:14.09]Because...think about it this way,

  [02:15.98]we are getting married later,

  [02:18.07]which means we are coming

  [02:19.73]at marriage by the time

  [02:21.25]that we have houses,

  [02:22.68]retirement accounts,

  [02:24.16]we may have kids from

  [02:25.60]a previous marriage,

  [02:26.83]we wanna take care of

  [02:28.42]all of those things,

  [02:29.67]and just tying the knot

  [02:31.50]can actually put those assets

  [02:33.42]in a precarious position.

[02:34.90]M: And having that money talk

[02:36.92]when you are in love is so hard,

  [02:39.00]isn't it?

  [02:39.86]W: It's hard

[02:40.27]when you are not in love.

  [02:41.70]I mean, I only say I do

[02:43.77]what I do for a very specific reason,

  [02:46.67]talking about money used to

[02:48.85]and still does at some point

  [02:50.62]make me completely nuts

  [02:52.09]and if you don't have

  [02:53.85]these conversations,

  [02:55.05]then you are going to

  [02:56.48]really do yourself

  [02:57.85]serious financial damage.

[03:00.25]M: Although it is a tough job

  [03:01.95]to talk about money,

[03:03.18]you gotta have the talk, right?

  [03:05.19]W: Yeah, that's true!

  [03:06.56]M: OK! First,

  [03:08.28]let's talk about income.

[03:10.37]Now here is a question for you.

  [03:12.04]Can getting married

  [03:13.47]lower your income?

  [03:15.22]W: It absolutely can.

  [03:17.12]Because if, let's say,

  [03:18.92]you are toward retirement age,

[03:20.81]and you are earning more money

  [03:22.76]in retirement

[03:23.64]as a single than getting married.

  [03:25.70]And it can actually

  [03:27.06]lower the amount of money

  [03:28.23]that you have to

  [03:29.25]draw on from alimony.

  [03:31.06]M: Now, I always thought

  [03:33.39]according to taxes,

  [03:34.86]like everyone says, oh,

  [03:36.53]getting married is so good

  [03:38.12]for your taxes,

  [03:39.53]you always end up

  [03:41.01]saving money on taxes.

  [03:42.61]Is it true or not?

  [03:44.19]W: Not necessarily.

  [03:45.79]If you file jointly,

[03:47.52]that's probably the best way to go,

[03:49.72]but there is the thing called

  [03:52.00]marriage penalty

  [03:52.81]and it doesn't go away

  [03:54.17]when you get older.

  [03:55.87]You can actually

  [03:57.07]lose money to taxes.

  [03:58.66]If you get married,

  [04:00.46]your spouse is going to

  [04:01.75]inherit all of your assets

[04:03.53]without paying any taxes on them.

  [04:05.82]But it may mean

  [04:06.79]that your kids do not.

  [04:09.21]This is the end

[04:10.20]of Part One of the interview.

  [04:12.08]Questions 1 to 5 are based on

  [04:14.58]what you have just heard.

[04:17.46]1. What is the main topic

  [04:20.23]of the interview?

  [04:31.60]2. What may be

  [04:33.35]the financial result

  [04:34.66]of getting married?

  [04:46.03]3. According to Jean Chatzky,

  [04:48.91]which of the following statements

  [04:50.84]is CORRECT?

  [05:01.96]4. What is the relationship

  [05:04.72]between marriage and income?

  [05:16.89]5. What can we know

  [05:19.16]about taxes and marriage?

  [05:31.22]Now, listen to Part Two

  [05:32.78]of the interview.

  [05:34.51]Questions 6 to 10 are based on

  [05:36.22]Part Two of the interview.

  [05:38.63]M: That screams a prenup,

  [05:40.42]right? I mean,

[05:41.49]you should just get a prenup,

  [05:43.56]which means you have to

  [05:45.02]fill out an agreement

  [05:46.01]before marriage.

  [05:47.43]W: Well,

[05:47.86]a lot of people really do need to

  [05:49.75]look at the prenup question.

  [05:51.86]The older you are,

  [05:52.77]the more you come

  [05:54.00]to the party with,

  [05:55.03]particularly

[05:56.32]if you come to the party

  [05:57.89]with either kids from

[05:59.04]a previous marriage or a business.

  [06:01.43]You gotta protect that,

[06:03.37]and that means getting a lawyer

[06:05.12]in your court and a lawyer in his

[06:07.53]and sitting down at the table.

  [06:09.46]M: Well,

  [06:10.01]let's talk about kids.

  [06:11.80]If you have grown kids,

  [06:13.86]how does getting married later

  [06:15.39]in life affect them?

[06:16.91]W: You have to look at

  [06:17.85]the question of inheritances.

[06:20.27]If your new spouse is gonna all

  [06:22.18]of a sudden inherit everything

  [06:23.96]that you have,

[06:24.82]your kids are all of a sudden not

[06:26.91]going to unless you take care of

  [06:28.98]that in your wills and

  [06:30.35]with the prenup.

  [06:31.86]M: OK. Let's talk

[06:33.02]about the pros of getting married.

  [06:36.01]Financially,

[06:36.90]what's the good side of that?

[06:39.02]W: There are some good things

  [06:40.49]in terms of real estate.

  [06:42.00]If you own a house

[06:43.42]and your spouse owns a house,

  [06:45.28]when you get married

  [06:46.75]you are allowed

  [06:47.44]to take a $500,000 capital gain

  [06:50.63]rather than

  [06:51.20]a $250,000 capital gain

[06:54.44]as you could as a single person.

  [06:56.67]You may have to

  [06:57.74]live in that house

  [06:58.94]for a couple of years

  [06:59.94]before you sell it

  [07:01.32]and rent the other one,

  [07:02.91]but that can be

  [07:04.36]a huge amount of

[07:05.39]money to stock in the bank.

  [07:07.09]M: It sounds reasonable

  [07:08.68]to have a certain marriage.

  [07:10.81]W: Yeah, that's right!

[07:12.37]Also you are gonna save money

  [07:14.34]on auto insurance premiums

  [07:16.16]and homeowner

  [07:17.02]insurance premiums.

[07:18.60]So there are some good things

  [07:20.39]and two together can definitely

[07:22.55]live more cheaply than two apart.

  [07:24.81]M: And again,

  [07:25.85]you know it's just important

  [07:27.28]to have the money discussion

[07:29.18]no matter how painful it is,

  [07:31.05]right?

  [07:32.00]W: Absolutely.

[07:33.07]And if you can't do it yourself,

  [07:35.16]sit down with an advisor

[07:37.17]and do it together, but do it.

[07:38.96]M: OK, Jean, thank you so much

  [07:41.55]for the great advice.

[07:42.91]It should be very helpful for

  [07:44.64]the audience.

[07:45.87]W: My pleasure to share my ideas

  [07:47.65]with you!

  [07:49.23]This is the end

[07:50.43]of Part Two of the interview.

  [07:52.44]Questions 6 to 10 are based on

  [07:54.78]what you have just heard.

  [07:57.69]6. What should people consider

  [08:00.76]before marriage

  [08:01.89]if they have kids?

  [08:13.43]7. According to the interview,

  [08:16.31]which of the following does

  [08:18.16]marriage contribute to financially?

  [08:30.63]8. Which of the following

  [08:32.99]insurances

  [08:33.62]does marriage save money on?

  [08:46.20]9. Which of

  [08:48.08]the following statements

  [08:49.52]about marriage

  [08:50.36]and finance is CORRECT?

  [09:02.64]10. What does Jean

  [09:04.84]advise us to do

  [09:05.84]about the money discussion

  [09:07.42]before marriage?
