  [01:27.58]Body Language in Business

  [01:30.32]Good morning, everyone.

[01:31.81]Today, we are going to talk about body language and its importance in business.

[01:38.28]As we all know, body language accounts for over 90% of a conversation!

[01:45.07]Body language can be used to help conduct an interview,

[01:49.73]give a presentation or make that important sale:

[01:53.90]a conversation stretches so much further than speech.

[01:58.63]Body language is the reason why selling face-to-face

[02:02.86]has a huge advantage over selling by phone.

[02:06.84]Usually when we communicate with or see people,

[02:11.20]we only respond to what is being said, heard or generally seen.

[02:17.05]There is so much more involved and most of us do not pick up on it:

[02:22.09]it's our body language and it can express a thousand words.

[02:27.50]Our body language will give others an impression of ourselves or show our emotions.

[02:34.30]You're probably using it right now to listen to this lecture.

[02:39.28]Our body language is an important aspect of running a successful business

[02:45.06]as we cannot always say what we really feel.

[02:49.00]This means we have to act positive in negative situations.

[02:54.22]You can also identify other people's body language

[02:58.05]and know what they really mean: whatever they may be saying.

  [03:02.66]First of all, posture.

[03:05.27]You may immediately think of this as standing tall and up right as much as possible.

[03:12.11]In fact, it is the natural alignment of your head and body

[03:16.41]without the use of tension and 'locking'.

[03:19.96]Everyone has a different posture and it usually develops through habit over the years.

[03:26.36]This may be slumping your shoulders forward or hanging your head:

[03:30.78]anything that has come to feel natural.

[03:33.96]Your posture may show how you will approach a situation.

[03:38.58]For example, if you stand with your shoulders hanging, arms folded,

[03:43.49]and leaning to one side, it will look as if you aren't ready for

[03:48.10]or interested in the task in question.

[03:51.27]Should you stand with strong shoulders, head up,

[03:54.75]arms out by the side and closed fists,

[03:57.80]you will look as if you are ready for anything no matter how much stress is involved.

[04:03.65]Looking at a person's feet when they are sitting down

[04:07.73]will tell you who is an extrovert and who is an introvert.

[04:12.27]Extrovert - toes pointing out, introvert - toes pointing in.

  [04:18.51]Secondly, the space around you.

[04:21.94]Those who stand always look more powerful than those people who are sitting down.

[04:27.68]This is because they are taking up more space.

[04:31.41]So if you feel comfortable standing,

[04:34.46]use it to look as though you have a higher status then those around you.

[04:39.44]When you move around, the more space you take up

[04:42.73]can make others seem threatened by your presence.

[04:46.23]This is because those around you may feel

[04:49.66]that their presence in the area is less significant.

[04:54.07]In such case, they may move around using as little space as possible.

[05:00.00]If you are sitting, you can still give an image of power.

[05:04.54]If standing isn't appropriate, use more space by stretching your legs out

[05:10.33]or by having your arms at the side of the chair.

[05:13.75]When you are on the phone and you need to be assertive,

[05:17.31]standing up will project your urgency.

  [05:21.06]Thirdly, hand-to-face movements.

[05:24.67]Look out for customers that use hand-to-face movements

[05:28.59]such as holding their chin or scratching their face.

[05:32.88]This can usually show that they are thinking of making a purchase

[05:37.19]but they have concerns, for example, "can I afford it"

[05:41.67]or "what if I pick the wrong size", etc.

[05:46.22]This may be a cue for you to move in before they leave

[05:50.76]and inform them that they can "buy on credit if preferred"

[05:54.68]or that they can "exchange the product if it is not suitable", etc.

[06:00.46]It is a fact that many customers do not ask to solve their queries

[06:06.13]and therefore leave if they are unsure.

[06:09.49]This is why it is important to recognise this common form of body language.

  [06:15.90]Now, about facial expression.

[06:18.94]A simple smile can make others feel more at ease

[06:23.00]while a frown can make people see that you are aggressive or unsure of something.

[06:28.91]We use facial expressions to get our points across in the right context.

[06:34.51]For example, your message would suffer

[06:37.74]if you were saying how angry you are with a huge smile.

  [06:42.86]Next, eye contact.

[06:45.72]When someone talks to you, do they look directly at you or look away?

[06:51.95]Maintaining eye contact when talking or listening to someone

[06:56.43]gives an impression that you or they are confident and honest.

[07:01.97]Making little eye contact can say that the other person doesn't like you,

[07:07.07]is nervous or shy, or perhaps believe that they are higher in status

[07:12.36]and think that eye contact isn't necessary.

[07:16.03]Also, look out for it if you believe that someone isn't being truthful,

[07:21.44]as most people can't keep eye contact when they are bending the truth.

[07:26.98]However, someone looking at you non-stop is stressful

[07:31.71]and in these situations you should throw your hands around a bit more

[07:36.19]or point to brochures and objects to distract them.

[07:40.30]If talking to people outdoors, avoid wearing sunglasses

[07:45.53]as this can be very uncomfortable for the other person

[07:48.95]and can give an image of trying to hide your identity.

[07:52.93]In addition, try to blink less

[07:55.79]as this can make it difficult for the other person to understand you.

[08:00.83]Blinking less also gives an image of confidence.

[08:05.19]OK. That's pretty much what I want to say.

[08:08.86]Let me finally remind you that body language comes in many forms,

  [08:14.09]as you have seen above.

[08:16.20]Different people have their own ability to recognize body language

[08:21.06]and they will recognize it with different meanings to other people.

[08:25.60]You can always use body language to make you appear more confident,

  [08:30.64]powerful and trusting.

[08:33.19]All right, you may video yourself tonight

[08:36.44]and check for clues of positive body language.

[08:39.86]Next time, we shall talk about gender differences in body language.

[08:46.74]Now you have THREE minutes to check your work.

[11:51.38]This is the end of Section A MINI-LECTURE.
