[01:27.49]Four Steps of Learning a Foreign Language

  [01:31.16]Good morning, everyone.

[01:32.96]Today, we are going to talk about an important topic among college students:

[01:38.83]how to learn a foreign language fast and free.

[01:43.06]There is one thing that always amazes the new round of college freshman —

[01:48.41]the fact that the years they spent studying a foreign language in high school

[01:52.89]was essentially worthless. They learned nothing.

[01:57.56]What is the point of spending years studying a language

[02:01.35]if in the end you know the amount of a beginner?

[02:05.21]There has to be a better way to learn.

[02:08.51]Luckily, with the Internet and all the resources available,

[02:12.87]it is very possible to learn a language, quite fluently, for free

  [02:17.72]without traveling to that land.

[02:21.58]The problem with most formal language class

[02:25.17]is the insistent mix of conversation, grammar, and vocabulary all mixed together.

[02:32.57]This method considerably slows a person down.

[02:37.11]Think of it, for a moment, as someone who is obese, which would work faster:

[02:43.46]1) dieting and dropping the fat pounds,

[02:47.35]then eating larger amounts and exercising to put on muscle,

[02:51.96]or 2) trying to lose the fat while simultaneously putting on muscle?

[02:58.55]The first is the better choice, as dieting requires less food

[03:03.48]and putting on muscle requires more — you need to start somewhere.

[03:08.46]The same principle applies to learning a foreign language fast —

[03:13.32]the brain needs a foothold, somewhere to get a strong grip and begin the work.

[03:19.37]This method I'm going to outline works, and it works well.

[03:24.47]It requires, ideally, one hour minimum of studying per day,

[03:29.82]a notebook, an Internet connection, and preferably an mp3 player or iPod.

[03:37.85]The four steps should be followed in order —

[03:41.08]the steps listed are the way the brain learns best.

[03:45.25]Trying to do one step before the other will slow the learning process down.

  [03:51.55]Step 1: Alphabet and Pronunciation.

[03:56.66]The brain, first and foremost, wants to be able to pronounce what it sees.

[04:03.56]Even if you don't know what the word means,

[04:06.63]the brain is satisfied if it can pronounce the word.

[04:11.05]When you first saw a word, what did you think first?

[04:15.34]The pronunciation or the meaning? The pronunciation.

[04:20.13]To learn the proper way to pronounce the alphabet

[04:23.43]and how to transliterate it, if using foreign letters,

[04:27.49]do a Google search for audio files. You will be able to find these on any language.

[04:34.52]You can listen to them with computer speakers,

[04:37.26]or you can download them to an mp3 player.

[04:41.18]Either way, it is best to listen to them with headphones on,

[04:45.84]so you can hear the nuances of the speech.

[04:49.45]Repeat each sound, and continue to memorize until you have it all learned.

[04:55.37]Ideally, this should take you no more than one week.

  [05:00.53]Step 2: Vocabulary.

[05:03.89]The very next thing that the brain wants is vocabulary —

[05:08.49]words are the most basic form of communication.

[05:13.16]It's the same way with children —

[05:15.71]drink, potty, and hungry are all basic words that convey a meaning.

[05:21.44]This is the most basic form of communication.

[05:25.48]Each language has approx. 2000 words

[05:29.46]that are the most used in everyday conversation,

[05:33.20]and these are the ones you will need to learn.

[05:36.62]The rest of your vocabulary can be expanded overtime

[05:40.91]with literature and movies in that language.

[05:44.52]Try to obtain a list of the most common words

[05:47.88]in the language you are learning by running a Google search.

[05:52.42]If you cannot locate one, then obtain a dictionary

[05:56.28]and pick out all the words you use every day — particles, nouns, verbs, etc.

[06:03.31]Make flash cards, download a flash card program,

[06:07.23]or makes flash cards for your mp3 player if it has picture capabilities.

  [06:13.08]Memorize the words thoroughly,

[06:15.45]until you can say them on command, at anytime, without thinking about it.

[06:21.00]You should be able to look at a page full of these words

[06:24.67]and readily understand them without even thinking about it.

[06:29.28]You should be able to look at an object in a room and says its name

[06:34.21]with the language you are learning without hesitation.

[06:38.31]If you can do this, then you are ready to move on.

[06:42.55]Learning these words should take approx. one month,

[06:46.78]assuming you work on them diligently and try to learn 50-100 words every day.

  [06:54.99]Step 3: Grammar.

[06:58.06]Only after you have a good foothold on pronunciation and a large vocabulary

  [07:04.15]should you begin with grammar.

[07:06.58]It is so much simpler to work at deciphering a text

[07:10.38]when you understand all the words.

[07:13.24]This will allow you to pick up on the structure habits

[07:16.82]and differences in word order and phrases.

[07:20.49]Search online for a grammar manual, or a collection of lessons.

[07:25.53]Once you have found one, study all the basics —

[07:29.39]conjugations, word order, and exceptions to the basic rules.

[07:34.74]Once you have a grasp of the conjugations possible and the word order,

[07:40.21]proceed to step 4. Step 3 should take approx. one month

[07:45.94]if studied for an hour or two every day.

  [07:49.98]Step 4: Reading and Listening.

[07:54.03]The final step is perhaps the most difficult and rewarding.

[07:59.32]In this step, you will begin to work on

[08:02.31]your reading level and listening comprehension.

[08:06.04]This is time-consuming at first, but progresses the level of understanding quickly.

[08:12.45]Search online for short stories, children's stories,

[08:16.58]or novels in the language you are learning.

  [08:19.75]Work at deciphering these.

[08:22.12]Transcribing them into your language is the best way to learn quickly.

[08:27.22]A dictionary will be needed for a while,

[08:30.20]but will help you expand your vocabulary quickly.

[08:33.88]At the same time, you need to learn

[08:36.12]the listening comprehension and casual pronunciation.

[08:40.66]This can also be done online,

[08:42.77]and this is where an mp3 player or iPod will come in handy.

  [08:47.81]Download podcasts in that language,

[08:50.99]download movies and television shows in that language,

[08:54.60]and watch online videos in that language.

[08:58.64]Most DVDs have multiple languages, also. Try to write down what they are saying.

[09:05.61]This will force you to pay attention. After a month of listening,

[09:10.28]you should be able to discern the words easier.

[09:13.82]Practice pronouncing words like natives. That's it!

[09:18.61]After going through each step, simply continue to write novels in that language,

[09:24.28]and to watch movies in that language,

[09:26.46]and try to set up video pen pals to speak in that language.

[09:31.25]With enough practice, I am sure you will be able to speak the language

[09:35.66]on a higher level in 6 months than you could with 3 years of formal classes.

[09:43.81]Now you have THREE minutes to check your work.

[12:48.38]This is the end of Section A MINI-LECTURE.
