  [10:03.03]SECTION A TALK

[10:06.58]In this section you will hear a talk.

[10:10.14]You will hear the talk ONCE ONLY.

[10:12.83]While listening, you may look at ANSWER SHEET ONE

[10:32.94]You have THIRTY seconds to preview the gap-filling task.

  [11:09.68]Now listen to the talk.

[11:11.40]When it is over, you will be given TWO minutes to complete your work.

  [11:16.50]How to Reduce Presentation Stress

[11:19.79]A little bit of fear as you prepare for a big speech or presentation is common.

[11:25.37]Even the best speakers in the world get anxious

[11:28.01]before they get on stage or speak in front of a large group.

[11:31.59]Let me first tell about what causes the presentation stress.

[11:35.66]It comes from the fear of being judged,

[11:37.98]which stems from all of the attention that people place on you

  [11:40.91]when you're speaking. Ideally,

[11:42.82]you need to be able to deliver a loud, effective speech.

[11:46.48]Yet doubts over our own ability can create a feeling of fear

  [11:51.21]that is tough to shake.

[11:52.57]The stress can only be reinforced as well.

[11:55.51]If you go up there and do a great job,

[11:57.92]but make a few mistakes, your mind tends to focus on the mistakes,

[12:02.31]and your fear is then confirmed.

[12:04.59]Now I offer you some strategies

[12:07.11]that will help reduce your presentation stress.

[12:10.16]First and foremost, practice and prepare.

[12:13.37]Make sure that you are completely knowledgeable

[12:16.00]about the topic you are going to present.

[12:18.07]Anticipate questions that the audience may ask you

  [12:21.30]and prepare your response.

  [12:22.98]Verbally rehearse your presentation aloud

[12:25.83]with the goal of speaking clearly, smoothly and knowledgeably.

[12:30.10]Record yourself after you have "presented" your speech a few times

[12:34.25]and assess how successful your preparation has been to that point.

[12:38.25]Think if you were an audience member,

[12:41.25]how would you react to the speaker?

[12:43.32]What can you do to make the presentation sound better?

[12:46.47]Experienced speakers know when to emphasize words

  [12:50.15]for greatest impact while speaking.

[12:52.53]Most importantly, switch the focus from you

[12:56.01]and your anxiety to your audience.

  [12:58.92]Change your internal conversation.

[13:00.95]Instead of saying "I am so nervous that I think I will be sick",

[13:05.39]say "I think I can really help these people

[13:08.65]with the information that I am going to share".

[13:11.04]Have confidence in the goal of your presentation

[13:14.07]which is to have a positive impact on your listeners.

[13:17.61]They leave your presentation with new information

[13:20.72]that they can implement in their lives.

[13:23.36]To remain focused on this goal, think about a time

[13:26.61]where you succeeded in helping others to learn new

[13:29.85]and valuable information and how powerful

[13:32.53]it felt to be able to share your knowledge with others.

[13:36.20]You can also work with a speech therapist

[13:39.61]who can guide you through the process

[13:41.72]of decreasing your fear of public speaking.

[13:44.34]A therapist experienced in the art of communication

[13:47.17]can teach you where to pause and phrase,

[13:50.20]what words to emphasize for the greatest impact,

[13:52.87]how to eliminate distracting fillers such as

  [13:55.24]"um, so, like, you know".

[13:58.84]When you are in control of your speech,

[14:00.96]you are more in control of the situation.

[14:03.88]Don't let your fear of public speaking limit your career opportunities

  [14:08.33]and social interactions.

[14:10.15]Master your fear so that you will have enough adrenaline

[14:14.01]to be energized but not too much anxiety that nerves will inhibit you.

  [14:19.00]Learn to reduce the stress!

[14:22.15]NOW you have TWO minutes to complete your work.

[16:25.72]This is the end of Section A talk

  [16:29.41]SECTION B CONVERSATIONS

[16:33.99]In this section you will hear two conversations.

[16:37.20]At the end of each conversation,

[16:39.63]five questions will be asked about what was said.

[16:43.64]Both the conversation and the questions will be spoken ONCE ONLY.

[16:49.36]After each question there will be a ten-second pause.

[16:54.23]During the pause, you should read the four choices of A, B, C and D,

[17:01.99]and mark the best answer to each question on ANSWER SHEET TWO.

[17:07.24]You have thirty seconds to preview the questions.

  [17:42.93]Now, listen to the conversations.

  [17:45.51]Conversation One

  [17:47.23]W: Good evening. King's restaurant.

[17:49.98]M: Good evening. I'm ringing about the job

  [17:52.96]I understand you have vacant?

  [17:54.53]W: Oh, yes.

[17:56.32]M: I'd like to find out a few more details if I may.

[17:59.87]W: Yes, of course. Can I take your name?

  [18:02.90]M: It's Peter Chin.

[18:04.76]W: Ok, Peter. Well, if you want to ask about the job

[18:09.17]and then if we're both still interested,

[18:11.86]we could arrange you to come for an interview.

[18:14.94]M: Great, thanks. I'm afraid I missed the advert for the job

[18:18.89]but I heard about it from a friend.

[18:21.19]W: That's no problem at all.

[18:23.46]What would you like to know?

[18:25.23]M: Well, um, what sort of work is it--washing up?

[18:29.72]W: No. It's answering the phone.

  [18:32.18]M: Oh, right, fine.

[18:34.35]W: And not waiting at table.

  [18:36.98]M: That'll be good.

[18:38.70]And how many nights a week would it be?

[18:40.58]W: Well, we're really only busy at the weekend.

  [18:43.45]M: So two nights?

[18:45.32]W: Three actually, so it would work out 12 hours a week.

[18:49.77]M: That'd be fine. It wouldn't interfere with my studies.

[18:53.65]W: Are you in the university?

[18:55.72]M: Yes, first year Physics student.

  [18:58.26]W: Oh, right

[19:00.39]M: Because I'm not an EU national,

  [19:02.71]would I need a work permit?

[19:04.80]W: Yes, you would. Just get you tutor to sign it.

[19:08.53]M: That wouldn't be a problem if I were to get the job.

[19:11.83]Um, where exactly is the restaurant?

[19:14.32]W: Well, we have two branches

[19:16.08]--the one we're recruiting for is in Hillsdunne road.

[19:20.07]M: Got that, thanks. Is it near a bus stop?

[19:24.12]W: Yes, the nearest one would probably be just beside the library.

[19:28.72]M: Oh, yes, I know it.

[19:30.80]That'll be fine for me. And could I ask about the pay?

  [19:34.50]W: We're offering 4.45 pounds an hour.

[19:38.81]M: That's very good. My last job was 3.95 an hour.

[19:43.91]W: We feel it's pretty good

[19:46.08]and we also offer some good fringe benefits.

  [19:48.85]M: Really?

[19:50.27]W: Well, we give you a free dinner, so you eat well.

[19:53.61]M: Right. Better than hostel food.

  [19:56.18]W: We certainly hope so.

[19:58.35]And we also offer extra pay for working on national holidays.

  [20:02.87]M: Oh, that's a really good perk, isn't it?

  [20:05.55]W: Yes, we think so.

[20:07.72]And then because of the difficulties of getting public transport,

[20:11.63]if you're working after 11 o'clock, we drive you home.

[20:15.17]M: Oh, that's good to know.

[20:17.54]W: We'd certainly be interested in inviting you for an interview,

  [20:20.92]if you're still interested?

  [20:22.86]M: Oh, yes, certainly.

[20:24.38]Could I just also ask what qualities you're looking for?

[20:28.04]W: Well, for this particular job,

[20:29.98]we want a clear voice, which you obviously do have.

[20:32.90]And you must be able to think quickly, you know.

  [20:37.13]M: Well, I hope I'd...

[20:39.10]W: So, when could you come in for an interview?

  [20:41.23]How about 5pm tonight?

[20:43.19]M: That's fine. See you tonight.

[20:46.20]This is the end of Conversation One.

[20:48.62]Questions 1-5 are based on Conversation One.

[20:53.48]1. How did the man know about the job?

[21:07.82]2. What is the main responsibility of the job?

[21:22.45]3. Why does the man need a working permit?

[21:36.69]4. What do we know about the fringe benefits of the job?

[21:51.88]5. According to the woman, what quality does the man surely have?

  [22:08.22]Conversation Two

[22:09.69]W: So, what can I do for you today?

[22:13.23]M: Well, um, next month is the deadline for declaring a major,

[22:16.77]and uh... I still don't know what I want to major in.

  [22:20.62]W: Don't worry. That's common with sophomores.

[22:24.58]Have you narrowed down your possibilities?

  [22:26.75]Do you have a list?

  [22:28.77]M: Uh, no, I don't. I've... I've always had a hard time making decisions,

  [22:34.37]especially hard ones.

[22:36.44]W: All right. Well, why don't we start with subjects

[22:39.67]that you're sure you don't want to major in?

[22:42.51]M: OK. Well, I hate science, and I'm not very good at math,

[22:47.25]so those are out. Um, I don't think business would be good for me.

[22:52.35]I don't want to work in an office from 9 to 5.

[22:55.79]Uh... I like to move around, you know, maybe get outside,

[23:00.34]and kind of be my own boss.

[23:02.31]I don't want someone looking over my shoulder all the time.

[23:05.66]W: Mmm... we're off to a good start. No business, math, or science.

  [23:11.26]So, let's switch gears

[23:12.03]and consider topics you might want to choose for a major.

[23:16.30]Um... of all the subjects you've taken last year

[23:19.84]and so far this term, which ones have you liked?

[23:23.53]What kinds of classes have you found interest you the most?

  [23:27.83]M: There's a lot them. I love literature,

[23:30.76]and my psychology class was also pretty interesting.

  [23:34.48]Philosophy was kind of cool;

[23:36.90]so was world history with Professor Briggs.

[23:39.93]I learned a lot in my visual arts class, and...

[23:43.09]oh yeah, my roommate talked me into taking sociology,

[23:47.40]which I thought would be boring, but it turned out to be great!

  [23:51.38]So, um, that's the problem.

  [23:54.16]I like so many different things;

[23:56.07]I can't pick just one of them!

[23:58.52]W: Oh, I see. Hey, do you like to write by any chance?

[24:03.17]M: Yeah! English was one of my favorite classes in high school,

[24:07.20]and one of my best too!

[24:09.19]I got all A's, except for one B+ from Ms. Morris junior year.

[24:14.69]W: I've got an idea. How about trying journalism?

  [24:20.49]M: Journalism?!

[24:21.82]You mean, like being a newspaper reporter or magazine writer?

[24:25.00]W: Yes. Journalists have to cover many different stories,

[24:29.58]so they learn a little about a lot of things.

[24:32.00]You wouldn't be chained to a desk all day,

[24:35.30]and you'd work largely on your own,

  [24:37.01]gathering materials and writing stories.

[24:39.74]There's something different to learn about almost every day.

[24:43.47]Also, many of the classes you've already taken

[24:46.53]satisfy the first-year requirements of the journalism department.

[24:50.45]You see, they want you to take a broad spectrum of classes.

[24:54.08]You don't even start taking classes

[24:56.00]in the journalism department until next year.

[24:59.00]M: Hmm... I've never thought of journalism before.

[25:02.53]Yeah, maybe I should check into it. Thank you, Mr. Grouton.

  [25:07.33]W: You're welcome. Remember,

[25:10.30]the adviser's office is open every weekday from 8 to 4,

[25:14.75]if there's anything else I can do for you.

[25:17.42]This is the end of Conversation Two.

[25:19.91]Questions 6-10 are based on Conversation Two.

[25:23.93]6. Why does the man go to see the woman?

[25:39.31]7. Why doesn't the man want to major in business?

[25:53.97]8. What did the man think of sociology before taking it?

[26:08.69]9. What major does the woman suggest the student take?

[26:23.12]10. When is the woman's office open?

[26:36.71]This is the end of Part Two Listening Comprehension.
