  [00:01.56]SECTION B CONVERSATIONS

[00:04.86]In this section you will hear two conversations.

[00:08.88]At the end of each conversation,

[00:11.22]five questions will be asked about what was said.

[00:15.38]Both the conversation and the questions will be spoken once only.

[00:21.37]After each question there will be a ten-second pause.

[00:26.04]During the pause, you should read the four choices of A, B, C and D,

[00:33.46]and mark the best answer to each question on Answer Sheet Two.

[00:39.51]You have 30 seconds to preview the questions.

  [01:13.12]Now, listen to the conversations.

  [01:16.18]CONVERSATION ONE

[01:18.59]Questions 1 to 5 are based on Conversation One.

[01:22.78]M: Hi. Mary. How are you?

[01:24.84]W: Fine, thanks. How are things going?

  [01:28.20]With the presentation, I mean.

  [01:30.38]M: Not too bad, actually.

[01:32.24]I found that survey you sent me really useful.

[01:35.66]W:The one about young people and mobile phones?

  [01:38.93]M: Yes.

[01:40.09]It shows how incredibly important mobile phones are to young people.

  [01:44.65]For example, did you know

[01:46.61]that 75 percent of teenagers use their phones at least once a day?

  [01:52.17]W: 75 percent! That's quite a lot.

[01:56.27]M: But actually texting is an even bigger thing

  [01:59.66]with young people nowadays.

[02:01.76]About 90 percent of them send at least one text massage a day.

[02:06.62]And if you look at the UK as a whole,

[02:09.28]people are sending over 2 billion text messages a month.

  [02:13.98]What's so amazing is

[02:15.29]that they've gone from zero to 2 billion in such a short time.

  [02:19.86]W: That's an amazing increase.

[02:22.43]You know, we could design a graph to show that.

[02:25.88]M: Great idea! By the way,

[02:28.29]what do you think the peak time for sending text messages is?

[02:32.80]W: I don't know. Seven thirty? Eight o'clock at night?

[02:36.95]M: Well, it is at night but apparently it's between ten thirty and eleven.

  [02:42.91]W: That's quite late. I'm surprised.

[02:46.01]M: What you have to remember about mobiles is

  [02:48.77]that they're part of young people's self-expression

  [02:51.97]and part of their identity.

[02:54.32]The most popular place you carry your phone is in your pocket.

[02:58.43]And the last place you should keep your phone is on your belt.

[03:02.99]That's a really big fashion mistake

[03:05.40]for most of the teenagers in the survey anyway.

[03:08.25]Now, you were going to talk about

[03:10.66]the different functions of mobile phones,

  [03:12.78]Mary, weren't you?

[03:14.43]Which functions did you decide to cover?

[03:17.39]W: Well, the most popular, obviously, is text messaging.

[03:21.50]But you seem to have a lot of information on that already.

[03:25.16]So I will leave that to you, if that's OK.

[03:28.26]M: Fine, so you won't cover text messaging, but…?

[03:32.42]W: I think video is still a pretty specialized thing at the moment.

[03:36.99]Not that many phones have it yet.

  [03:39.71]So I'm not covering that.

[03:41.77]But the other thing I'm going to look at is voicemail.

[03:45.53]It's not quite as popular with teenagers as the other functions

[03:49.89]but about two thirds still use it.

[03:52.94]M: OK. Let's talk about it next week.

[03:56.79]Questions 1 to 5 are based on Conversation One.

[04:01.35]1. What do we learn from the conversation

[04:05.46]about the survey sent by the woman?

  [04:17.79]2. According to the man,

[04:21.30]what is the bigger thing with young people today?

[04:34.78]3. What does the man think the peak time for sending text messages is?

  [04:51.45]4. According to the man,

[04:55.11]what is the least popular place to carry the phone?

[05:08.62]5. Why won't the woman cover video?

[05:22.30]This is the end of Conversation One.

  [05:26.04]CONVERSATION TWO

[05:28.23]Questions 6 to 10 are based on Conversation Two.

[05:32.93]M: Hi, I'm from the Students' Union.

[05:34.89]We're doing a survey of students' eating habits.

[05:38.44]Is it all right if I ask you a few questions?

  [05:41.86]W: Will it take long?

[05:43.61]M: No, not really. Five minutes maybe?

[05:46.49]There aren't all that many questions.

[05:49.04]W: And what's it for exactly?

[05:51.84]M: Well, we wanted to get an idea of the sort of things

[05:55.16]students eat on a regular basis,

[05:57.46]and find out how aware people are about diet and nutrition.

[06:02.06]The idea is to produce an information leaflet about healthy eating.

[06:07.46]W: Yes, I suppose something like that would be quite useful,

[06:11.57]a leaflet I mean, especially for new students.

[06:14.78]Anyway, what do you want to know, exactly?

[06:18.69]M: OK, first question. What would you say your favourite food is?

[06:24.50]W: That's easy. A burger and chips. Lots of chips!

[06:29.32]I must say I like a nice Chinese meal as well,

[06:32.73]and maybe spaghetti once in a while...

[06:35.28]But no, the best has got to be a burger.

[06:38.14]M: OK, and what's your least favorite food?

[06:41.54]W: Let me think. I've never been that keen on cauliflower,

[06:46.74]or fish---the smell puts me off.

[06:50.15]But no, the thing I really can't stand is salad.

  [06:54.35]Rabbit food, I call it.

[06:56.15]I know lettuce and things are supposed to be healthy and all that,

[07:00.06]but it's just not a real meal, is it?

[07:03.48]M: Mmm. You're getting into some bad habits there, you know.

  [07:07.48]Anyway, moving on… Let's take a typical day.

[07:11.54]How many meals do you have?

[07:13.34]I mean proper sit-down meals, not snacks.

[07:17.09]W: Well, I nearly always oversleep,

[07:19.74]which means I generally skip breakfast altogether.

[07:23.36]And then I'd probably just have a bar of chocolate for lunch.

[07:27.82]So in answer to your question,

[07:29.79]I don't sit down to a proper meal till the evening.

[07:33.59]M: OK. Typical student. I suppose!

[07:36.90]And the next question: How many eggs would you eat in a week?

  [07:41.41]One? Two?

[07:43.26]W: Well, I don't do much cooking as a rule,

[07:46.27]but every Sunday I make myself a nice fried breakfast as a treat.

[07:51.27]That's sausages, bacon and two eggs. Lovely!

[07:55.64]M: That sounds OK once a week.

  [07:57.79]But I wouldn't recommend it on a regular basis.

  [08:00.75]Too much fat.

  [08:02.10]And how about fresh fruit?

[08:04.76]Does it figure in your diet at all?

  [08:07.18]W: Not really, well,

[08:08.93]I know it's bad, but… I'm just not in the habit really.

[08:12.74]I suppose I might eat an apple once in a blue moon.

[08:17.26]M: Pity. But I suppose it's better than nothing!

[08:20.61]And would you say you had a sweet tooth.

  [08:23.63]W: I guest so.

[08:25.08]Well, most people have, haven't they?

  [08:27.68]Me, I can't resist a bar of chocolate.

[08:32.25]Questions 6 to 10 are based on Conversation Two.

[08:36.81]6. What does the man want to find out?

[08:50.75]7. What can we learn from the conversation

  [08:54.86]about the woman's eating habit?

[09:06.60]8. Why does the woman usually skip breakfast?

[09:21.45]9. What does the man think of the woman's fried breakfast?

[09:36.64]10. How often does the woman eat apples?

[09:51.05]This is the end of Conversation Two.

  [09:53.30]
