　　有一位老板想聘请一个人在办公室处理各项杂务。他提了几项要求。

　　BOSS: We want someone for general office dutiesreally. There are three main

　　things we're looking for.We want someone who can work withoutsupervision,

　　someone who's able to operate a switchboard... and a person who knows how toget

　　BOSS: Good.What about a switchboard? Do you know how to operate one like

　　this?

　　APPLICANT：Yes,I do. I've used one like that before.

　　我们往上—游见到的Barry正在消防队接受训练。她对宕己熊不能完成训练任务有些担心，于是就去问教练。

　　BARRY: I'm a bit worried, sir. Do you think I'll make it?

　　TRAINING OFFICER: Hmm... let's see. You've passed your entrance exam and

　　your medical.

　　BARRY: Yes, sir.

　　TRAINING OFFICER: Right. Well, from now on it's teamwork. And discipline.

　　Very important.It's no good if you can't cope with discipline.

　　BARRY: Yes, sir.

　　TRAIMNG OFFICER: Do you think you can cope?

　　BARRY: Yes, sir.

　　a course 课程

　　an electric typewriter 电机

　　ABILITY有没有能力

　　1.这一讲，我们学习怎样表示有能力做什么事。

　　I can use an electric typewriter.

　　I'm able to use an electric typewriter.

　　I know how to use an electric typewriter.

　　CAN

　　I can drive a car.

　　这是最常见的一种说法。用于现在时，意思与be able to和know how to一样。如果用于将来时，则表示“允许”(例如：You can

　　borrow my typewriter next week)，或表示“可能”(例如：I can meet you forlunch

　　tomorrow).

　　BE ABLE TO

　　I'm able to read music.

　　这个短语用于现在时，不如can更为多见。但用于将来时，则可突出时间因素。要表示过去有某种能力，就说was able to或wereable

　　to而不说could，因为could一词往往不指过去，而有别的含义。

　　KNOW HOW TO

　　She knows how to operate a switchboard.

　　这个说法也不如can用得多。它可以用来强调具备了某种必要的专门知识。

　　2.除以上三种说法外，还可以用：

　　BE CAPABLE OF

　　a) 后面跟名词。例如：

　　He's capable of hard work.

　　b)后面跟带- ing的动词。例如：

　　He's capable of completING the course.

　　Capable of往往用来形容某人具有某种能力或潜力。

　　3.提问与回答下面是对“能否做某事”的几种提问和回答：

　　a) Can you type?

　　- Yes，I can.

　　- No，I can't.

　　- No，I'm afraid I can't.

　　b) Are you able to use an electric typewriter?

　　- Yes，I am.

　　- No, (I'm afraid) I'm not.

　　c) Do you know how to operate a switchboard?

　　- Yes，I do.

　　- No, (I'm afraid)I don't.

　　注意：

　　I'm afraid这个短语是用来表示歉意的，它可以使否定的回答显得婉转一些。

　　第四部分：练习

　　在澳大利亚，如果想找工作，可以看报纸上的招聘广告。下面有两则这一类的广告。

　　第二个广告是一家计算机公司登的，为了招聘一位秘书。现在我们把White先生提的条件列在下面。假定你就是White先生，要与应聘的人谈话，看他是否具备这些条件。请你把要问的问题写下来，保留原来所提条件中斜体字的词语。例如：

　　Someone who can work as a member of a team.

　　Can you work as a member of a team?

　　请试做以下的例句：

　　1. Someone who is able to type.

　　2. Someone who knows how to operate a switchboard.

　　3. Someone who can use an electric typewriter.

　　4. Someone who is capable of working long hours.

　　5. Someone who can work on Saturdays.
