　　The threat of impending financial disasterconcentrates political minds

　　wonderfully. OnThursday a group of Congressional leaders heardHank Paulson, the

　　Treasury secretary, and BenBernanke, the Federal Reserve chairman, paint a

　　direeconomic scenario if they did not approve a moresweeping remedy for the

　　financial crisis. Studentand car loans, not just mortgages, would all beharder

　　to get. The economy would sink into asevere recession.
