　　⑴The Great Depression : It took place from 1929 to 1933. After the collapse of the economy in 1929, optimism of the 1920s turned to bleak despair. The depression brought physical and psychological hardship to all classes of Americans. The middle class lost their belief in ever increasing prosperity, and thousands of young people wandered, homeless and jobless, through the country.

　　⑵The 1920s in the U.S. has been described by many historians as a period of material success and spiritual frustration or confusion and purposelessness.许多历史学家都把美国的20世纪20年代描写成一个物质上富足，精神上迷惘或漫无目的的时期。

　　⑶The stock market crash was the beginning of long economic depression from 1929 to 1933.

　　⑷The aim of President Roosevelt’s New Deal was to “save American democracy” and to overcome the most serious economic crisis of the capitalist system up to that time.罗斯福新政目的在于“拯救美国民主”及克服资本主义制度有史以来最严重的经济危机。

　　3. In February 1972, President Nixon visited China and met Mao Zedong and the two countries issued the Shanghai Joint Communiqué. This visit ended twenty-three years of hostility and led to the establishment of diplomatic relations in January 1979. 1972年2月。尼克松访华，与毛泽东会晤，双方签署了《上海联合公报》。这次访问结束了长达23年的不友好，并促成了1979年1月两国外交关系的建立。

　　4. Nixon resigned because of Watergate Scandal, becoming the first president to do so in American history. 水门事件使尼克松成为美国历史上第一位辞职的总统。
