　　5. “冷漠处世” ：译为 “cynicism and indifference to life”。 “cynicism” ：愤世嫉俗， “indifference” ：漠不关心 ，冷淡 。

　　6. “无喜无悲，无忧无愤”：用非限定性定语从句引导，“无 ……无……”用 “neither...nor...”结构 。全句译为 ： “...,which arouses neither happiness nor sadness, neither worries nor anger...”。

　　7. “对人世 的一切都失去兴趣和欲望” ：译为 “which costs people their interest in and desire for anything”。“cost”：使人失去，导致损失。注意interest和desire 后搭配不同的介词 ，不能只用其 中的一个代替 。

　　8. “热情 已如柴薪尽燃 ，故而冷漠处世 ……这也是沉默。”全句译为“Enthusiasm fades like dying embers and thus leads to cynicism and indifference to life, which arouses neither happiness nor sadness, neither worries nor anger, and which costs people their interest in and desire for anything—that is silence.”。

　　9. “有过爱 ，有过恨 ，有过迷茫 ，有过颖悟 ，有过一呼百应的呐喊 ，有过得不到回报的呼唤。”“有过 ……”不能译成there was... ，因为这里说 的 “爱”或“恨 ”的主体都是人 ，说的是人的感情 ，人的感受 。因此译文才用了experiences一词，指人的情感体验 。

　　10. “迷茫”：这里译为disorientation ，意思是 “迷失方向”，“不知所之”。orient是 “确定方位 、适应 、熟悉”的意思 。

　　11. “颖悟” ：与“迷茫”相对 ，是迷茫后重新明白，所以译为reorientation 。

　　12. “一呼百应的呐喊” ：这里译为 “order-giving that was answered by hundreds” ， “呐 喊”可以理解为发出号召、命令 ，故译为“order-giving”。

　　13. “有过得不到 回报 的呼唤” ：译为“call-issuing that was not answered by a single soul ”， “呼唤”对应“呐喊 ”，前面用了复合词 ，这里也用 复合词交相呼应 。soul ：指人，与person 同义 。

　　14. “……然而却守口如瓶，只是平静地冷眼看世界，这是沉默。”前面六个 “有过”都是指人 的各种情感体验 ，后面的转折是想说 ，有 的人 即便有着这样丰富的体验 ，仍然 能够心平气和，冷眼旁观 。但是 ，话有没有说过 ，是一种存在 ，因此可使用there be句型。“守口如瓶”：译为“there is not a word uttered”， “utter”意为“说话 ，表达 ，发出声音”。

　　15. “只是平静地冷眼看世界” ：译为 “but only a calm eye that watches on this world”。a calm eye ：用部分代替整体 ，修辞上 叫做提喻 ，这里用人体 的一部分—— 眼睛——来代替人 。

　　16. “饱经忧患”：译为 “worries and sufferings”，字面上没有体现出 “饱经” ，因为这两个字的意思实际上已经包含在worries和sufferings的复数形式中，指各种各样的忧虑和苦难 。

　　17. “阅尽”：看到过，品尝过。可能指自己亲历的事 ，也可能指看到、听到的事 ，这么多的意思似乎没有一个很合适的词来表达 ，就用了“taste”，而且还用了复数 ，就是说不止是一次 ，而是多次、反复。

　　18. “人生百态” ：译为 “changes and vicissitudes of the world”， “vicissitude”有 “变 迁兴衰”之意 ，实际上与change是同义的 ，但这个词更具体，指世态的变迁 ，而非泛指任何变化。changes和vicissitudes连用也可以起到意思由弱到强、由笼统到具体的效果 。

　　19. “千山万壑” ：译成“mountains and valleys”，用复数的形式来表示数量之多。与前文的“阅尽”译成“taste”有异曲同工之妙 。

　　20. “屐痕”：译成“footprints”，即“足迹 ，脚印”之意。

　　2 1. “涛声 ” ：考虑到原文的“涛声”范围比较窄，说是“涛声 ”实际上连风声、雨声 、海鸟的叫声等等都包括在内，所以译成“noises” ，因为 “noises” 意思更广一点儿 ，可以包括大海发出的各种声响。

　　22.“却深思不语 ”：译成“all but hidden unrevealed”，这里并没有译出“深思”的意思 ，但是“hidden”表明了“不语”，并用“unrevealed”强调“hidden”。

　　Silence is soundlessness; silence exists in different forms.

　　An empty head or a blank mind leads to speechlessness—that is silence. Enthusiasm fades like dying embers and thus leads to cynicism and indifference to life, which arouses neither happiness nor sadness, neither worries nor anger, and which costs people their interest in and desire for anything—that is silence.

　　Despite all the experiences of love and hate, of disorientation and reorientation, of order-giving that was answered by hundreds and call-issuing that was not answered by a single soul, there is not a word uttered, but only a calm eye that watches on this world—that is also silence.

　　Worries and sufferings, tastes of changes and vicissitudes of the world, footprints left in mountains and valleys and noises of rivers and oceans cherished in the heart are all but hidden unrevealed—that is still silence.
