　　七夕节正逢仲夏时节，天温气暖，草木繁盛。在晴朗的夏夜，天上繁星闪耀，一道白茫茫的银河横贯南北，在银河的东西两岸，各有一颗闪亮的星星，隔河相望，那就是牵牛星和织女星。因为织女是一个美丽聪明、心灵手巧的仙女，又与牛郎有一段美妙的爱情传说，所以凡间的女子便在这一天想她求赐美满姻缘，乞求智慧和巧艺。由此，七月初七年轻女子坐看牵牛织女星，成为七夕节的民间习俗。

　　【译文】The Double-Seventh Day meets the mid-Summer climate, when the weather around is warm and the woods and flowers are blooming in luxury. At the clear summer night with shining stars, the white Milky Way goes clearly over the sky, and the Cowherd and the Weather, just the legendary Niu Lang and Zhi Nu, shine with glimmer on the both sides of the Milky Way. Owing to the legendary love story, the young girls on the Earth will come under the stars at the night of lunar July 7, praying for silk weaving skills and happy marriage as well, which thus becomes a very popular activity in the Chinese folks.

　　除了乞求获得美满的婚姻，年轻姑娘们在七夕之夜七巧赛巧也是民间的一大习俗。在这个浪漫的夜晚，姑娘们坐在花前月下，摆上时令水果，相互学习穿针引线的技巧，比赛看谁缝制针线活最漂亮。虽然各地区的乞巧的方式不尽相同，但各有趣味。

　　【译文】Besides praying for a happy marriage, another folk custom is that young girls pray for needling skills and compete for best needlework. At the romantic night, young girls sit under the pergola with seasonal fruits on the table, learn from each other the needling skills and do some needlework competition. The way of competition differs in different regions but is quite interesting with local styles.

　　穿针应巧——最传统的乞巧活动是穿巧针。姑娘们手执彩线将线穿过针孔，如一口气能穿七枚针孔者叫得巧，被称为巧手，会得到织女的祝福。七夕之后，姑娘们将所制作的小工艺品、玩具互相赠送，以示友情。

　　【译文】Threading Needles This is the most traditional activity on the Double-Seventh Day. Girls get together under the star-filled shy, with both hands behind their backs, holding needles and threads. At the word “Star”, they immediately begin to thread the needles. The one who can continuously threads at least seven needles without any failure will be thought as the cleverest and most skillful woman in needlework and she will be blessed by Zhi Nu, the Weaver. Then the girls will compete to see who can do the most beautiful needlework. After that, they will exchange their wonderful needlework to bless each other.
