[01:15.00]Introduction to and Requirements for Psychology Course

  [01:20.48]Good morning,

[01:21.14]welcome to this course, Introduction to Psychology.

[01:24.19]My name is Dr. Paul Bloom.

  [01:26.79]I'm professor of this course.

[01:28.84]And what this is going to be is a comprehensive introduction

[01:32.44]to the study of the human mind.

[01:34.79]So, we are going to cover a very wide range of topics

  [01:38.39]including brains, children, language, sex,

[01:42.39]memory, madness, disgust, racism and love,

  [01:46.84]and many others.

[01:48.29]The style of this course is that

[01:50.14]there'll be two lectures a week, as well as course readings.

[01:53.59]Now, to do well in the course,

[01:55.99]you have to attend both the lectures and do the readings.

[01:59.59]There will be some parts of the readings

[02:01.89]that will not find their way into the lectures,

[02:04.49]and some lectures that will not connect at all to the readings.

[02:08.14]The slides are going to be made available online.

[02:11.64]I'm going to post it in a format

[02:13.45]which will be black and white

  [02:14.92]and easy to print out

[02:16.07]so you don't have to worry about this.

[02:18.42]But again, attending to the slides

[02:20.62]is not a substitute for attending class.

  [02:23.47]There's a textbook, Peter Gray's Psychology, 5th edition,

[02:27.62]and there's also a collection of short readings.

  [02:29.92]It's an excellent textbook;

  [02:31.82]it's an excellent collection,

[02:34.07]and you should get them both.

  [02:35.52]They're available at Labyrinth bookstore

[02:37.31]on York Street or you get them online.

  [02:40.21]The evaluation goes like this.

[02:42.56]There is a Midterm and there is a Final.

[02:45.41]The Final will not be held in the exam period,

[02:48.06]because I like to take long vacations.

[02:50.46]It will be held on the last day of class.

[02:53.11]The exams will be multiple choice and short answer,

[02:56.51]fill-in the blank, that sort of thing.

[02:58.46]Prior to the exams I will post previous exams online,

[03:02.71]so you have a feeling for

[03:04.01]how these exams work and so on.

[03:06.31]There will also be review sessions.

[03:08.36]Starting at the beginning of the third week of class,

[03:11.70]on each Monday I'm going to put up a brief question

  [03:14.76]or set of questions,

[03:16.26]which you have to answer and your answers

[03:18.36]need to be sent to your teaching fellow.

[03:20.57]And you'll be given a teaching fellow, assigned one, by Friday.

[03:24.57]Now, this is a large class,

[03:26.97]and if you don't do anything about it,

  [03:29.12]it can be very anonymous.

[03:30.57]And some of you may choose to pursue it that way

  [03:33.57]and that's totally fine.

[03:35.02]But what I would suggest you do

[03:36.66]is to establish some contact with us,

[03:39.22]either with me or with any of the teaching fellows,

[03:42.76]and I'll introduce the teaching fellows sometime next week.

[03:46.22]You could talk to us at the beginning or at the end of class.

  [03:49.52]Unless there are special circumstances,

[03:52.02]I always try to come at least ten minutes early,

[03:54.97]and I am willing to stay late to talk to people.

[03:57.69]You could come by during my office hours,

  [04:00.29]which are on the syllabus.

[04:01.99]I'm very willing to talk to students about intellectual ideas,

[04:05.64]about course problems and so on.

  [04:07.84]Okay. That's the introduction to

  [04:10.44]and requirements for the course.

  [04:12.69]Do you have any questions?

[04:17.25]Now you have two minutes to complete your work.

[06:21.11]This is the end of Section A TALK.
